Introduction

Rather than working to a brief set by someone else, fine artists have to originate and develop their own ideas and work.

Our Fine Art course is designed to help you to develop your ideas and work in the most appropriate media and processes available. You will be encouraged, through exploration and experimentation, to widen your knowledge and experience of fine art in order to develop your potential.

You will be taught by staff who make and exhibit their own work. Through regular contact with staff in the studios, and specialist workshops in visual arts practices such as drawing, painting, print, photography, video and installation you will be will helped to find your own direction and develop work to exhibition standard.

You will be taught about the history of contemporary art and encouraged to discuss issues affecting the making of your own work. As part of this study, regular visits are organised to major cultural centres such as London, Liverpool and Birmingham. The Student Union also organises a foreign visit each year. You  will also learn essential skills in marketing work, approaching galleries and organising exhibitions. You will also be encouraged to work collaboratively with other students on exhibitions and events outside of the College. Recent students have taken part in the Hay on Fire Festival and exhibited in many local events such as Herefordshire Arts Week (h.Arts).

This degree is validated and awarded by the University of Wales. For further details regarding the University and its validation services, please log on to www.wales.ac.uk/validation or email validation@wales.ac.uk

Course

The Foundation Degree in Fine Art consists of eight modules, the majority of which are practical studio modules. After the first structured module in year one, typically you will write your own module briefs, with support from staff, developing your own ideas and practice. At the end of the course your work will shown in a public exhibition at the college. In addition to developing your expertise in fine art, you will develop a range of skills useful after college in the workplace. These include interpersonal and oral communication skills developed through giving presentations; research and writing skills through diaries, logbooks and essays and the use of computers, e-mail and the internet through the College’s IT facilities. Staff are available to give specialist support in the development of these skills where necessary.

After Your Foundation Degree

By the end of the Foundation Degree you should have the skills and knowledge to be able to move on to your next step. Most students continue their studies in Fine Art to BA (Hons) level here at the College, and assuming satisfactory completion of the Foundation Degree then this transfer takes place automatically.

Some students may decide to complete their BA within a more specialist area like photography at the College or to move to another college. Others may move directly into employment. Click here for further details
