For the last six years Herefordshire College of Art & Design has been part of a highly successful project, enabling artists and craftspeople to work on their own projects or research within the workshops and studios of the College. It has given students a unique opportunity to observe and learn from practising artists who in turn have been able to access the colleges’ specialist workshops and facilities.
Herefordshire College of Art & Design is one of a selection of Colleges in the UK chosen for the scheme called, ‘Artists Access to Art Colleges’ (AA2A), now in its seventh year – a lottery funded project, organised by the Arts Council of England and the Council for Higher Education in Art & Design (CHEAD). This year, 4 artists have been working at the College as part of this scheme:
Ben Gamble - Ben’s work is multi-disciplinary, using different methods and materials to create artefacts in both 2D and 3D, applying print-based techniques to other materials. For this particular body of work Ben has explored the relationship between painting, printmaking and ceramics, working on both large and small-scale.
Charlie Hurcombe - Charlie’s work explores existing concerns associated with disrupted form and the relationship between visual and tactile experience. Themes associated with painting and sculpture is present and the shift between 2D and 3D has become significant in his work. Charlie uses stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium and household gloss paint to create objects that twist on their own axis. The utilisation of manufactured items throughout, such as wooden handles is significant in promoting issues of interaction, function and scale.
Valerie Coffin Price - Valerie’s residency has provided her with access to large scale print technology in the digital photography. During her time at the College, many of Valerie’s original ideas did not work out – however, she went on to produce a large scale hanging sculpture, Shadows, using digital images taken in Cambodia in 2005. Valerie transferred her images onto large Perspex sheets.
Wally Gilbert - Wally works primarily has a silversmith but drawing has always been important to me. I began this residency with the intention of following up on etching and aquatints made in an Australian residency in 2003. However, soon after starting I became interested in learning about screen printing on textiles and digital printing.
fettle - the latest performance/exhibition from fine artist, Lee Hassall. Lee's work is widely exhibited, both nationally and internationally. His current exhibition at The Ice House in Hay on Wye, is part of the Hay Festival programme. To see Lee's exhibition/performance in the real please visit The Ice House, Poetry Bookshop, Brook Street, Hay on Wye from 27 - 29 May (1 - 5 pm) or 2 - 4 June (1 - 5pm). Lee is also a fine art lecturer on the College's Diploma in Foundation Studies.
Now in its sixth year, the annual Book Arts competition has become a key event for the College, students and staff. Open to both staff and students from further and higher education, the competition provides a platform for artists to explore the many aspects of Book Arts - from the traditional to more experimental approaches and concepts to book making. Artists, designers and photographers all challenge the notion of Book Arts - and, every year these boundaries are pushed further. This year was no exception. Current prize winners work can be viewed at the Hay on Wye Library from 26th May to 9th June. Opening Times are: Monday 10am-1pm,2-4 .30pm & 5-7pm (closed Bank Holiday Monday), Thursday 10am-1pm & 2-5pm, Friday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm, Saturday 9.30-1pm The exhibition continues at the following venues:

Using Dickens’ extraordinary words and an ensemble cast this powerful stage version takes us from its opening image of Pip alone on the windswept marshes, to the haunted darkness of Miss Havisham’s cobweb-strewn lair.
Dickens’ much-loved tale of Pip, a callow young man whose path through life is shaped by two experiences in his early years which turn out to have far-reaching consequences for him. Pip first has a traumatic and dramatic encounter with escaped convict Magwitch, whom he befriends, and then the eccentric and capricious Miss Havisham, and her beautiful but spiteful adopted daughter, Estella.
Bartlett’s inventive and atmospheric adaptation brings to thrilling theatrical life this classic exploration of childhood terrors and hopes – and adult dreams and regrets. Performed and designed by our 2nd year students this promises to be a gripping and dynamic production.

Vered Lahav – Légendes
When artist Vered Lahav discovered a dead bird on the side of the road, she began to think about the lessons one should have learnt in a lifetime and consequently a saying began to form in her mind, ‘If birds could read and books could fly.’ The contrasting of the two impossible functions in that phrase is the inspiration behind this new body of work.
The installation, Légendes, takes its title from a French word meaning ‘myths’ or the captions that appear beneath a photograph in a book or an album. Art Critic Robert Clark has described Lahav’s work as a “poetic collage of evocative image fragments created through combinations of photography… and… sculptures immaculately constructed from a variety of materials.” (Robert Clark, The Légendes Catalogue, 2005) In Légendes, the sculptural element is provided by the rusted, bronze cast sculptures of seven weighty books, supported by long thin rods, that grow out of flat square bases, rooted to the gallery floor. The raw and deliberately distressed appearance of these objects offers a stark contrast to the simplicity of the seven large-scale photographs featuring individual, common or garden species of bird, that lie against a clean, white backdrop. The deceased birds can be seen as symbolic of human existence, while the upright stands imitate lecterns, alluding to the lessons one might have learnt during one's lifetime. Each tome is splayed with its pages open, in a manner suggestive of a bird in flight, and it is in this simple resemblance that Lahav makes her poetic connection. As with Lahav’s previous work, Légendes can be defined as a form of mixed-media collage in which a series of images are set in three dimensional spatial relation to one another. The exhibition exists less as individual components and more as a whole because of the specific dialogues that have been constructed between each image and object.
Vered Lahav is an intriguing artist who has exhibited widely nationally and internationally, at venues in Hamburg, London, Bath, Tel Aviv, Manchester, Birmingham, Osnabruck, plus many more. Lahav is a photographer and installation artist, known best for her beautiful and unusual photographic installations, that juxtapose photography and three-dimensional objects made from a variety of materials – glass, wax, wood and rusted metal. Vered also teaches at Herefordshire College of Art & Design on the BA (Hons) Fine Art course.

Patrick Boyd was born in London. In 1989-90 he was awarded h a Fulbright Fellowship at the Museum of Holography in New York.
New York City was then the capital of art holography, but after visiting a few of the labs he was disappointed with what I found there. Holograms were being made that had no real meaning except visual interest. Many also seemed to be getting by on the principle that 'If you can't make 'em good, make 'em BIG'.
Boyd arrived with the idea of making large scale fashion images as he had done before in England but decided then that he would attempt instead to use holography as a documentary medium, recording events and scenes that he found in everyday life.
"Holography and photography had been my chosen media for some years, and at this time I started to experiment with combining the two to make holographic stereograms (holograms generated using a series of photographic images). To me there is nothing as visually fascinating as a stereogram, with which one can incorporate the element of time into a work. My recent holograms use a chronological sequence of 36 exposures, shot in quick succession which in the finished stereogram give the effect of time passing as the viewer moves his eyes from left to right. The work is essentially an interactive experience for the viewer, but during which he remains in control, deciding for himself the speed with which the image is revealed and explored, frame by frame"
"Using only a hand-held 35mm camera means that I can be totally spontaneous, unlike other stereogram methods which involve long setting-up times and possibly a crew to operate the camera. During my time in America I first began the habit of carrying my camera with me everywhere I went, enabling me to sow the seeds of a new piece exactly at the moment a scene strikes me".
Patrick will also give a talk to students on Thursday 15th Jan as part of the College's Folly Arts Lecture series.
Take One…Bell The Take One ...project is inspired by the National Gallery's ‘Take One Picture’ project.
Each year the Gallery focuses on one painting from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in primary classrooms across the country. The 2012 object is a Celtic bell. Over the centuries legends have been told about the Marden Bell, and few facts are known about it, but similar bells are known to have been carried by Celtic missionaries. There is also evidence to suggest that such bells might have been revered as sacred objects. Pupils from seven schools and students from the Hereford College of Arts have been involved with the project. Their work, along with the Marden Bell itself, will be displayed in the South Transept of Hereford Cathedral from Saturday June 2nd – Saturday June 16th
Participating students from 1 year Extended Diploma in Art & Design have created some striking and contemporary pieces.

Three of our BA (Hons) Illustration students have formed the collective, Little Boxes. They have installed a large exhibition at the Hereford Deli. THis is the first public outing of the collective's work. Little Boxes' members are Stephanie Moulden, Suzanne Booten, and Jo Parker.
In their own words, they describe their installation: "This exhibition is the collective work of three third year BA Hons Illustration students. We go by the name of Little Boxes. We've created an installation mainly made of recycled cardboard. We wanted to create something that was a self indulgent escape from our busy lives as we finish our degrees. It's full of hope, exploration, and adventure."
The exhibition runs until 3rd March.

Nancy Paddens’ first exhibition since returning to the art field after buying bed linen for John Lewis in London. Nancys’exciting new contemporary range of fabric wall pieces (framed and canvases) use a combination of new techniques to the textile world such as photographic heat transfer mixed with inks, dyes and collages imagery. Her work stands out because of her experienced ability to layer her drawings with subtle prints of receipts, maps and other text. Her exhibition includes mixed media textile illustrations depicting scenes of Venice, Verona, New York and Prague.
“I create one off mixed media illustrations inspired by cities I have travelled to and lived. I combine my initial pen and ink mark making with paint, ink, dye and collaged imagery to finish with a collection of fabric and paper wall pieces. Whilst visiting these places I also collect items such as maps and receipts which I then incorporate into the design to give the pieces a more personal feel.”
The Second Year Extended Diploma in Music students will be holding their Final Showcase on 8th and 9th March at 1:30 pm and 7:00pm performances. They have designed their showcase around the idea of a futuristic world that has banned music:
Can we live without Music? Of course not; but in a world where music has become an illegal substance (‘noise’), what happens to those who need their daily ‘fix’? Who controls its supply? And who enforces the law?
‘NOISE’ uses original music and theatrical elements to deliver a thought-provoking tale of feuding gangs, survival on the streets and divided loyalties.
The students are hoping to tour the performance around local schools. If you are interested in booking the performance, please contact the College 01432 273 359.
Students from FdA Textile Design and FdA Fine Art will be exhibiting alongside artist Richard Corbett at Galanthus Gallery.
Inscape, is the result of an innovative collaboration between the gallery, Hereford College of Arts and local artist Richard Corbett. The title of the exhibition takes its reference from the 19th Century poet Gerard Manley Hopkins who termed 'inscape' as being the complex characteristics that make everything in nature unique and that evoke the spiritural in us.
