Title: 100 Hours

Subject: Exhibition

Description:

For the last six years Herefordshire College of Art & Design has been part of a highly successful project, enabling artists and craftspeople to work on their own projects or research within the workshops and studios of the College. It has given students a unique opportunity to observe and learn from practising artists who in turn have been able to access the colleges’ specialist workshops and facilities.

Herefordshire College of Art & Design is one of a selection of Colleges in the UK chosen for the scheme called, ‘Artists Access to Art Colleges’ (AA2A), now in its seventh year – a lottery funded project, organised by the Arts Council of England and the Council for Higher Education in Art & Design (CHEAD). This year, 4 artists have been working at the College as part of this scheme:

Ben Gamble - Ben’s work is multi-disciplinary, using different methods and materials to create artefacts in both 2D and 3D, applying print-based techniques to other materials. For this particular body of work Ben has explored the relationship between painting, printmaking and ceramics, working on both large and small-scale.

Charlie Hurcombe  - Charlie’s work explores existing concerns associated with disrupted form and the relationship between visual and tactile experience. Themes associated with painting and sculpture is present and the shift between 2D and 3D has become significant in his work. Charlie uses stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium and household gloss paint to create objects that twist on their own axis. The utilisation of manufactured items throughout, such as wooden handles is significant in promoting issues of interaction, function and scale.

Valerie Coffin Price - Valerie’s residency has provided her with access to large scale print technology in the digital photography. During her time at the College, many of Valerie’s original ideas did not work out – however, she went on to produce a large scale hanging sculpture, Shadows, using digital images taken in Cambodia in 2005. Valerie transferred her images onto large Perspex sheets.

Wally Gilbert - Wally works primarily has a silversmith but drawing has always been important to me. I began this residency with the intention of following up on etching and aquatints made in an Australian residency in 2003. However, soon after starting I became interested in learning about screen printing on textiles and digital printing.

Title: Confusions

Subject: Show

Description:

Herefordshire College of Art & Design Performing Arts Presents ‘Confusions’ by Alan Ayckbourn

Join the Foundation Degree and Diploma in Professional Practice Students as they work together to perform a series of five interlinked one-act plays that explore the human dilemma of loneliness.

The plays looks at modern issues such as; marital conflict, self delusion and infidelity. With characters as diverse as a house-wife, a waiter, a vicar and a councilor, who share a common problem, they are all misunderstood and oppressed. We understand the reasons behind their behavior and recognise their cries for help. Ayckbourn holds a mirror up to society and reflects through comedy and farce the undertones of modern living.

The first venue will be the in-house Folly Arts Theatre at the Folly Lane site, before moving onto a nationwide tour of theatres, schools and colleges.

The production relocates the stranded group of ‘boys’ (in this production the cast are mixed) from a desert island, to a place that can’t be described; It isn’t reality but neither is it entirely make-believe. The semblance of order imposed by some of the ‘boys’ quickly deteriorates as the majority of the ‘boys’ turn lazy. The subsequent descent into savagery is explored by looking at some aspects of the modern world that we now live in; gang culture; knife crime and CCTV imagery. With its influences drawn from practitioners such as Artaud and Peter Brook, the production promises to be engaging and exciting.

Focusing upon contemporary developments in electronic dance music, to challenge the conventional view of transatlantic cultural domination emanating from Anglo-American “centre”. Arguing that; contemporary global popular culture, facilitated by advances in communications technologies, and increasingly complex global flows of people, images and capital, is increasingly decentralized and has a tendency to be based upon networks of mutually interdependent local “scenes”. The emerging landscape of global popular culture requires a theoretical reassessment of transatlantic cultural relations, which includes an appreciation of the complexities of “glocal” taste information and of the decentralized global networks of cultural production and consumption.

Title: Jane Bradney - Italian Style in the English Garden in the 19th Century

Subject: Lectures

Description: Jane Bradney successfully completed an MA in Garden History at the University of Bristol where she is now studying for a PhD. She is a freelance garden historian with particular interests in Regency and Victorian gardens and the work of Humphry Repton.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century English Grand Tourists dismissed Italian gardens for their lack of variety and their woeful state of decay and neglect yet by the middle of the century, the tables had turned, and Italian gardens had apparently become the inspiration behind some of the most extravagant of Victorian garden designs and some of the most enduring images of the Arts and Craft garden. This lecture explores the fickle relationship between English gardeners and Italian gardening style in the nineteenth century.

Title: Val Hurlston-Gardiner - The History of the English Garden through Painting

Subject: Lectures

Description: A freelance garden historian for over 20 years, Val has lectured widely throughout the country, as well as in the States and she has been a speaker on the QE2.

Throughout the history of English gardens comparatively few paintings survive, particularly those depicting gardeners at work. Those that do remain give us a fascinating glimpse of period gardens and the ways in which they were used. This lecture will trace their development from the Medieval period with its Christian symbolism to the great Edwardian gardens of a golden age. The delicate paintings of Thomas Robbins in the 18th century will throw a different light on this period.

Title: Steven Desmond - Use & Beauty: the Garden Kingdom of Worlitz

Subject: Lectures

Description: Steven Desmond is an independent landscape consultant specialising in the conservation and management of historic gardens in Britain and Europe. Recent work has included the awardwinning Radio 4 series Five Gardens of Spain. A parallel series on German gardens is planned for May 2007, with Wörlitz as one of the featured sites.

Between 1764 and 1818 the extensive gardens at Wörlitz, east of Dessau, were laid out as part of a programme to bring the ideals of the Enlightenment to this little principality in rural Germany. Among the many sources of inspiration for this project were the works of Rousseau, Palladio and ‘Capability’ Brown. The modern visitor walks or rows past an apparently endless sequence of images of follies, bridges, orchards and other instructive delights in a setting of lakes and woods. Open to all comers since its creation, Wörlitz is one of the great garden experiences of Europe.

In January 2006 Nick started work at Lydiard Park on the outskirts of Swindon, a local authority owned 18th century country park that is under going a £5.3 million restoration. The funding has been provided by the HLF and local business partnerships with the support of English Heritage and DEFRA. Nick is helping to implement and oversee this important restoration project.

Title: Around

Subject: Exhibition

Description: Stephen Bourke is a ceramicist living and working in Hereford. He graduated from the Cardiff School of Art in 2005. His work is an investigation into process and the elimination of ideas through experimentation of mediums. He has recently branched out from working purely with ceramics and is now trying to combine his ideas in both ceramics and painting.

Alan Harrold is a painter who has relocated to Hereford from Aberdeen. Alan’s work while primarily portraiture is concerned not only with creating a likeness of the sitter, but with expressing a sense of loss and of memory. The feelings of loss and memory are implied by the minimal backgrounds and in some cases by the expressions of the model.

Using Dickens’ extraordinary words and an ensemble cast this powerful stage version takes us from its opening image of Pip alone on the windswept marshes, to the haunted darkness of Miss Havisham’s cobweb-strewn lair.

Dickens’ much-loved tale of Pip, a callow young man whose path through life is shaped by two experiences in his early years which turn out to have far-reaching consequences for him. Pip first has a traumatic and dramatic encounter with escaped convict Magwitch, whom he befriends, and then the eccentric and capricious Miss Havisham, and her beautiful but spiteful adopted daughter, Estella.

Bartlett’s inventive and atmospheric adaptation brings to thrilling theatrical life this classic exploration of childhood terrors and hopes – and adult dreams and regrets. Performed and designed by our 2nd year students this promises to be a gripping and dynamic production.

Title: Legendes

Subject: Exhibition

Description:

Vered Lahav – Légendes

When artist Vered Lahav discovered a dead bird on the side of the road, she began to think about the lessons one should have learnt in a lifetime and consequently a saying began to form in her mind, ‘If birds could read and books could fly.’ The contrasting of the two impossible functions in that phrase is the inspiration behind this new body of work.

The installation, Légendes, takes its title from a French word meaning ‘myths’ or the captions that appear beneath a photograph in a book or an album. Art Critic Robert Clark has described Lahav’s work as a “poetic collage of evocative image fragments created through combinations of photography… and… sculptures immaculately constructed from a variety of materials.” (Robert Clark, The Légendes Catalogue, 2005) In Légendes, the sculptural element is provided by the rusted, bronze cast sculptures of seven weighty books, supported by long thin rods, that grow out of flat square bases, rooted to the gallery floor. The raw and deliberately distressed appearance of these objects offers a stark contrast to the simplicity of the seven large-scale photographs featuring individual, common or garden species of bird, that lie against a clean, white backdrop. The deceased birds can be seen as symbolic of human existence, while the upright stands imitate lecterns, alluding to the lessons one might have learnt during one's lifetime. Each tome is splayed with its pages open, in a manner suggestive of a bird in flight, and it is in this simple resemblance that Lahav makes her poetic connection. As with Lahav’s previous work, Légendes can be defined as a form of mixed-media collage in which a series of images are set in three dimensional spatial relation to one another. The exhibition exists less as individual components and more as a whole because of the specific dialogues that have been constructed between each image and object.

Vered Lahav is an intriguing artist who has exhibited widely nationally and internationally, at venues in Hamburg, London, Bath, Tel Aviv, Manchester, Birmingham, Osnabruck, plus many more. Lahav is a photographer and installation artist, known best for her beautiful and unusual photographic installations, that juxtapose photography and three-dimensional objects made from a variety of materials – glass, wax, wood and rusted metal. Vered also teaches at Herefordshire College of Art & Design on the BA (Hons) Fine Art course.

Title: A Portrait of Kington

Subject: Exhibition

Description: For the last four years, staff and students from BA (Hons) Photography and FdA Commercial Photography studying at Hereford College of Arts have had an annual expedition to photographically explore a single hamlet, village or town. This annual project inspires the students to work together and celebrates the fact that they all have individual visions and photographic approaches towards one common location.

This year the courses descended upon Kington, accompanied by the renowned photographer and film maker John Bulmer, to make a comprehensive photographic record of life there. The resulting images form an exhibition which celebrates many different visual responses and interpretations, through the lens of many photographers to one place, reflecting the unique qualities that make a small town, from the architecture to its people. The resulting images were edited with the help of Roger Tooth, Picture editor of the Guardian newspaper.

The exhibition is open during the Hay Literary Festival.

Description:

Artists in Residence exhibition at Hereford College of Arts

Hereford College of Arts is delighted to be showcasing the work of 4 talented artists in residence, as part of the AA2A Scheme. For the last ten years, the College has been part of this highly successful project, enabling artists and craftspeople to work on their own projects or research within the workshops and studios of the College. It provides students with a unique opportunity to observe and learn from practising artists who in turn have been able to access the colleges’ specialist workshops and facilities.

Hereford College of Arts is one of a selection of Colleges in the UK chosen for the scheme called, ‘Artists Access to Art Colleges’ (AA2A), now in it’s tenth year – a lottery funded project, organised by the Arts Council of England and the Council for Higher Education in Art & Design (CHEAD).

This year, 3 artists have been working at the College as part of this scheme:
Lois Hopwood – Film-making and painting
Pam Wright – Digital imaging
Andrew Dixon – Illustration & cartoons
Rebecca Spooner - Photography

The AA2A project for 2010 is now ending and will be celebrated with an exhibition of work from all 4 artists, at Hereford College of Arts and open to the public from 20 April – 5th May

Title: Anguish of the Gods!

Subject: Show

Description: Created and performed by 2nd year National Diploma Music students, Anguish of the Gods is an explosive, conceptual rock music extravaganza based on the myths of Ancient Greece, featuring a range of diverse styles, genres and influences.

This highly original production forms the final major performance for 2nd year students before they move on to pastures new. The majority of them are either applying or have already been accepted to a number of music colleges and institutions such as Academy of Contemporary Music, Bristol Institute of Modern Music and Brighton Institute of Modern Music – to name but a few.

Told through a narrative, the evening will unfold through jazz, rock, voice and instrumental sounds – all within the confines of a fantastic 3 tiered set that cleverly creates the Temple at Mount Olympia. This really does promise to be a very original and contemporary take on Greek Mythology!

The production runs over 25 & 26th March with performances at 1.30pm and 7pm. Call the BGox Office on 01432 273359.  Tickets £4 (£3 cons)

Title: Patrick Boyd Hologram Exhibition

Subject: Exhibition

Description:

Patrick Boyd was born in London. In 1989-90 he was awarded h a Fulbright Fellowship at the Museum of Holography in New York.

New York City was then the capital of art holography, but after visiting a few of the labs he was disappointed with what I found there. Holograms were being made that had no real meaning except visual interest. Many also seemed to be getting by on the principle that 'If you can't make 'em good, make 'em BIG'.

Boyd arrived with the idea of making large scale fashion images as he had done before in England but decided then that he would attempt instead to use holography as a documentary medium, recording events and scenes that he found in everyday life.

"Holography and photography had been my chosen media for some years, and at this time I started to experiment with combining the two to make holographic stereograms (holograms generated using a series of photographic images). To me there is nothing as visually fascinating as a stereogram, with which one can incorporate the element of time into a work. My recent holograms use a chronological sequence of 36 exposures, shot in quick succession which in the finished stereogram give the effect of time passing as the viewer moves his eyes from left to right. The work is essentially an interactive experience for the viewer, but during which he remains in control, deciding for himself the speed with which the image is revealed and explored, frame by frame"

"Using only a hand-held 35mm camera means that I can be totally spontaneous, unlike other stereogram methods which involve long setting-up times and possibly a crew to operate the camera. During my time in America I first began the habit of carrying my camera with me everywhere I went, enabling me to sow the seeds of a new piece exactly at the moment a scene strikes me".

Patrick will also give a talk to students on Thursday 15th Jan as part of the College's Folly Arts Lecture series.

Title: Take One...Bell

Subject: Exhibition

Description:

Take One…Bell The Take One ...project is inspired by the National Gallery's ‘Take One Picture’ project.

Each year the Gallery focuses on one painting from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in primary classrooms across the country. The 2012 object is a Celtic bell. Over the centuries legends have been told about the Marden Bell, and few facts are known about it, but similar bells are known to have been carried by Celtic missionaries. There is also evidence to suggest that such bells might have been revered as sacred objects. Pupils from seven schools and students from the Hereford College of Arts have been involved with the project. Their work, along with the Marden Bell itself, will be displayed in the South Transept of Hereford Cathedral from Saturday June 2nd – Saturday June 16th

Participating students from 1 year Extended Diploma in Art & Design have created some striking and contemporary pieces.

Title: Progress Works

Subject: Exhibition

Description: The works presented here for this exhibition have been made by Third and Second Year BA Fine Art students at Hereford College of Arts.
This exhibition deals with notions of what constitutes a Progress Work, or work in progress, and what defines a work as being a ‘finished piece’. What are their differing functions and what purpose do the works fulfil? Is a work finished or abandoned? It is hoped that by presenting progress works along with so called finished and framed works, gestures that usually remain out of sight will be brought into a revealing and generous dialogue with the more honed and considered gesture. The submissions will be brought together in order to question each other, in the form of a non-narrative collection of images and objects. Our interest is to see how the sometimes divergent experiences of the private and personal could be brought to the public in the to-be-seen context of an exhibition.

Title: Going with the Flow

Subject: Exhibition

Description: This unique collaboration venture builds upon the professional links that have been established between Herefordshire College of Art & Design and the Creative Industries. Already, students graduating from the Fda/BA (Hons) Contemporary Applied Arts degree course greatly benefit from this experience. Annually, the undergraduates have the opportunity of profiling their work at the Degree Show, through appointments with gallery directors, regional arts officers and craft shop owners. ‘The Art Shop’, Abergavenny has positively supported students from the course who are embarking on careers in the field of Crafts and Applied Arts. It was through this connection that an exciting initiative emerged that would encapsulate the formative period of an arts degree experience. By focusing on the ‘creative process’ from inception to realisation – a journey through research, contemplation, material exploration, and design development to production, students would be challenged to respond to the theme of ‘Water’.

This exhibition is an opportunity to view a curated showcase of work selected from 22 emerging artist / designers and enjoy the diverse creative responses to this unique challenge.

Subject: Show

Description: For their final show, La Fama (HE Performing arts students) perform a retrospective of the life and works of the German dramatist Georg Buchner. Using two of Buchner's plays 'Woyzeck' and 'Leonce and Lena' as the starting point, La Fama have created a highly physical and engaging representation of his work.
Buchner, the inspirational German writer, is one of the pioneers of modern theatre. His works have inspired a generation of performance practitioners, such as Antonin Artaud and Bertolt Brecht. The pains-taking beauty of his “anti-classical” style of writing is still as relevant and important to contemporary society.
“Gorge”, performed by BA (Hons) Top up Year 3 and Year 2 Foundation degree students, is an exploration of key themes and issues surrounding Buchner’s life and works. By cross-pollinating aspect's of physical theatre, contemporary dance, acting and musical theatre and integrating visual and musical elements, the company will be exploring the common themes such as love, lust, boredom and rebellion which are inherent throughout Buchner’s writings, drama and study of his life.

Title: Celebrating Success!

Subject: Exhibition

Description: Art Students across Hereford & Worcester join forces in an outstanding showcase of work at the Worcester Porcelain Museum, 4 Dec – 7 January 2011

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Lifelong Learning Network are proud to showcase the artistic talents of higher education students across the region.

The work in the exhibition represents a small fraction of the creative talents and skills students in Herefordshire and Worcestershire have, and yet it clearly shows the enormous depth of talent within the region.

The Lifelong Learning Network is a national, funded project which oversees the need to provide greater opportunities for vocational students to progress into and through higher education. The Herefordshire and Worcestershire Lifelong Learning Network has been very successful in this regard - over 4 years they have funded more than 53 new vocational courses at 10 colleges and universities across the region, creating around a 1000 new places for vocational students. Within the Arts they have funded a broad range of projects. These include developing 15 new courses over 7 different institutions, providing new opportunities for creative people to study locally, to develop their talents and interests and to contribute to the life and economy of the region.

This particular project is a collaboration of work together with Hereford College of Arts, Hereford Sixth Form College, Royal National College, Worcester College of Technology University of Worcester, NE Worcestershire College, South Worcestershire College and Kidderminster College. The exhibition has been curated by Mandy Pritchard, Exhibitions Co-ordinator at Hereford College of Arts.

The Herefordshire and Worcestershire Lifelong Learning Network is due to finish in the New Year. It has made an outstanding contribution to Arts education within the region, and to the growth of local opportunities, for local people in the region to study higher education. We hope that you will enjoy this exhibition and recognise the talent of the artists, their tutors and their colleges.

Exhibition runs from 4th December until 7 January 2011 (Tuesday – Saturday 10.30 – 4pm), Worcester Porcelain Museum, Worcester

Title: A Portrait of Ledbury

Subject: Exhibition

Description: A Portrait of Ledbury
BA (Hons) Photography Students exhibit a photographic record of Ledbury

An exhibition of work showcasing images taken one day in February last year when photography students from Hereford College of Arts visited the town of Ledbury to make a comprehensive photographic record of life in the town, during just one day.

One image in particular, a photo of a little dog walking along the streets, taken by
BA (Hons) Photography student Cary Gough, became the focus and unofficial mascot for the Ledbury Poetry Festival in 2009, and featured on the front cover of the Poetry Festival brochure and publicity. Title: Amy Twigger Holroyd

Subject: Exhibition

Description: Hereford College of Arts is delighted to host an exhibition showcasing the recent work of Amy Twigger Holroyd.

Amy is a designer, maker, entrepreneur, and researcher specialising in sustainable fashion and textiles. She graduated in Fashion Design with Technology from Manchester Metropolitan University and went on to study in Winchester, Utrecht and Paris for her MA in European Fashion and Textile Design. She launched her knitwear label, Keep & Share, in Hereford in 2004 and the business has grown steadily ever since.

Keep & Share is Amy's way of investigating and demonstrating her sustainable fashion ideas - with an emphasis on an emotionally durable design - in a practice-led 'real world' situation. The Keep & Share range has developed in recent years to include knitting workshops and hand knitting kits. She has recently commenced a new, more conceptual body of work exploring issues of authorship and longevity.

Amy received the Crafts Council Development Award in 2005, and her iconic Gladys Cardi won the overall Products & Genius prize at the BDI, Industry & Genius Awards in 2007. In 2009 she was nominated for the Jerwood Contemporary Makers exhibition. She has exhibited and lectured widely, both nationally and internationally, and press coverage has included features in Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, The Observer, The Telegraph, Fashion Theory, Fiberarts and Blueprint.

Amy’s work can be view at Hereford College of Arts from 23rd Feb – 10 March 2010 (Mondays to Fridays, 9.30am – 4.30pm)

Title: Belief-An Exhibition

Subject: Exhibition

Description: Hereford College of Arts Extended Diploma Students and St John’s Methodist Church are pleased to announce the opening of ‘Belief’—An Exploration, an exhibition of student work, on Tuesday 27th March at 2PM. The artworks on display were made in response to conversations held between parishioners and students around the ideas of belief.

The students have worked hard to visually interpret their views in a thoughtful and respectful manner. Their works address a wide range of topics from abortion and euthanasia to celebrity culture.

Reverend David Meachem, who instigated this brief as an opportunity for students to work within a local community, is impressed with the results. He says, ‘Belief is not an easy concept to portray. Solutions that are affirming or comforting might be bland, whereas the cutting edge approach might shock or offend. Mounting an exhibition on ‘belief’ in a place of worship could be risky but is worth it if the piece says something worthwhile and has integrity. This exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into the minds of young artists as they bring their own unique interpretations.’

‘Belief’ can be seen at St John’s Methodist Church on Owen Street. Opens Tuesday 27th March at 2PM. Wednesday to Thurday the exhibition can be visited between 11AM and 6PM. Exhibition runs until Friday 30th, March, closing at 4PM.

Title: 1-15-12-06

Subject: Exhibition

Description: 1 – 15 – 12 – 06 is a group show of 5 artists who are exhibiting new work from 2/12/06 until the 15/12/06 at Herefordshire College of Art & Design.

Michael Birch is a surface pattern designer and works primarily with screen-printed textiles. He collects unusual imagery combining these with birds and exotic triffid like plants. Recently Michael has been developing ways to expand the imagery into other areas of presentation crossing the boundaries of design and fine art.  He is also a been a member of staff.

The work of Anna Falcini entitled Listening Posts, focuses on the many dedications, which are inscribed on benches in a local wood and the unsaid words which may be spoken in such a place but which are not formally recorded. These ideas are juxtaposed by the visual erasure of the Native American Indians from an area in Long Island, New York.  Anna is also a member of staff at the College.

‘ I like making work that reacts to the co-modification of our culture’ states Jaime Murray Jackson. Jaime is interested in re-examining what we are conditioned to accept as ‘normal’ and what we term as valuable in an environmental sense.

Dr Sally Claire Payen is a fine artist, primarily a painter, but has also undertaken projects using sculpture and installation. Her recent work has been a reflection of her working environment where ‘over a period of days, months, years, the debris in the studio grew.’ Time is a spectator to the debris of the studio where discarded drawings find a dialogue with tea bags, masking tape on the damp walls and brunt out brushes with caked-on-reds and blues.

In their own words, they describe their installation: "This exhibition is the collective work of three third year BA Hons Illustration students. We go by the name of Little Boxes. We've created an installation mainly made of recycled cardboard. We wanted to create something that was a self indulgent escape from our busy lives as we finish our degrees. It's full of hope, exploration, and adventure."

Students from Extended Diploma in Art & Design will be taking advantage of an opportunity to showcase their work in the windows of two popular shops in Hereford city centre.

Treds Shoes and The Map Centre formed the inspiration for the work.

“This exciting mixed media work has been produced by HCA extended diploma students. The theme of the project was “ Journey”, they looked at maps and shoes for inspiration and considered how these two elements come together in a journey.” Aine Venables, Extended Diploma in Art & Design Lecturer.

The work, which form a selection of screen prints and mixed media will on display at Treds Shoe Shop, Commercial Road, Hereford from Friday 11 March for one week. The exhibition will then move to The Map Centre, in Church Road from Friday 8th April.

Title: City Palettes

Subject: Exhibition

Description:

Nancy Paddens’ first exhibition since returning to the art field after buying bed linen for John Lewis in London. Nancys’exciting new contemporary range of fabric wall pieces (framed and canvases) use a combination of new techniques to the textile world such as photographic heat transfer mixed with inks, dyes and collages imagery. Her work stands out because of her experienced ability to layer her drawings with subtle prints of receipts, maps and other text. Her exhibition includes mixed media textile illustrations depicting scenes of Venice, Verona, New York and Prague.

“I create one off mixed media illustrations inspired by cities I have travelled to and lived. I combine my initial pen and ink mark making with paint, ink, dye and collaged imagery to finish with a collection of fabric and paper wall pieces. Whilst visiting these places I also collect items such as maps and receipts which I then incorporate into the design to give the pieces a more personal feel.”

Title: NOISE

Subject: Show

Description:

The Second Year Extended Diploma in Music students will be holding their Final Showcase on 8th and 9th March at 1:30 pm and 7:00pm performances. They have designed their showcase around the idea of a futuristic world that has banned music:
Can we live without Music? Of course not; but in a world where music has become an illegal substance (‘noise’), what happens to those who need their daily ‘fix’? Who controls its supply? And who enforces the law?
‘NOISE’ uses original music and theatrical elements to deliver a thought-provoking tale of feuding gangs, survival on the streets and divided loyalties.

The students are hoping to tour the performance around local schools. If you are interested in booking the performance, please contact the College 01432 273 359.

Title: Daryl Waller - Illustrator

Subject: Lectures

Description: Daryl’s work is inspired by his own experiences in the world, namely love, friendship, his childhood in the 80’s growing up in Cornwall’s tiny city of Truro, and his estrangement from the school system. Left cold by the national curriculum and ridiculed by teachers due to his undiscovered acute dyslexia his brain daydreamed off from the lessons in conformity and obedience and went on permanent holiday into his own thoughts. Daryl studied at Hereford on BA (Hons) Illustration and then went on to complete his MA at the Royal College of Art in 2003, and since has exhibited internationally.

Title: A Mmoment in Time - Student Exhibition

Subject: Exhibition

Description: Degree Students Exhibit at National Trust Property

The National Trust property Berrington Hall, Leominster will be exhibiting work by first year undergraduate students from Hereford College of Arts. The show is an accumulation of a project brief, 'A Moment in Time', where students were given the go ahead to use Berrington Hall and Croft Castle for the origins for their research.

The students responded to the ‘live brief’ with ideas developed from the internal and external decor, and artefacts and the Charles Paget Wade costume collection, which is currently held at Berrington Hall. Along with the estate and ground, and those at Croft Castle, the students had an extensive selection of material for exploration.

The project will now form an exhibition of work including an exciting array of artwork - from small pieces of jewellery to large sculptures, made with a range of materials and processes including wrought iron, silver, ceramics, wood, fabric and paper.

The students exhibiting are currently studying BA (Hons) Blacksmithing, BA (Hons) Contemporary Applied Arts and BA (Hons) Jewellery Design at Hereford College of Arts.

The exhibition will be held at Berrington Hall from 19 June until the end of July 2010.

Thanks are extended to Althea Mackenzie who curates the Charles Paget Wade costume collection, and Gareth Gwilt the House Manager at Berrington Hall, for their invaluable interest, support and help on the project.
