Artists Access to Art Colleges Scheme hosted by Hereford College of Arts A national project, funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council, England
The Artists Access to Art Colleges project, now in its 13th year, is a national project which in 2011/12 is offering 148 ‘mini residencies. Hereford College of Arts students at New Designers in London last week picked up one of the most coveted awards in Show – The New Designers Best Stand Award.
New Designers is a national and international showcase for all new graduates – it is the very springboard that can often launch a new designer’s career. Held every July, at the Business Design Centre in Islington, some 3,500 newly graduated designers come together representing the top 200 design courses from across the nation to meet industry employers, the media, trend predictors and a design hungry public.
BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing and BA (Hons) Contemporary Applied Arts students, together with the course staff painstakingly transported Hereford work to London and created a visually stunning stand, which captured an enormous amount of attention. It is, however, not just about having a well turned out stand – according to the criteria of the award, ‘they were looking for the most creative, imaginative, and professional looking stand design with the presentation and attitude of the graduate designers being as important as the finished stand” This award demonstrates the creative talent and professionalism of students coming from Hereford College of Arts – many of the students would have picked up commissions and gained invaluable contacts with creative directors from some of the major players in the design world.
The College is incredibly proud of this team achievement which brings together all the new emerging talent on offer in Hereford. We are delighted and will be watching how our graduates progress in their careers with great interest.

Around 20 of Hereford College of Arts' BA (Hons) Fine Art degree undergraduates will be working on a challenging outdoor project to produce a finished work in their choice of media in just one week. The project, Field Work, is to give students the opportunity to explore and interpret ideas outside the studio and to produce a completed piece of work for exhibition. Completed works will then feature in a dedicated Field Work exhibition at Down Stairs, the contemporary art gallery located at Great Brampton House.
Craig Barnes, Gallery Manager at Down Stairs, says: “Making art in site specific locations is a challenge for all artists. Come rain or shine, it’s important to get out of the studio once in a while. It will be fascinating to see how the students respond to the difficulties the project presents, and ultimately how the work responds to its environment.” Allison Neal, BA (Hons) Fine Art Course leader at Hereford College of Arts, says: “We are very excited to have a new venue showing contemporary art of such high quality in Herefordshire and we are delighted that our students are able to be involved in this excellent opportunity.”
The show opens with a preview reception on Saturday 29th October from 12–8pm, with hot cider served from 3pm onwards. The exhibition then remains open during opening hours of Friday to Sunday 12 –5pm until 6th November. For more information, visit Downstairs Gallery.
Hereford is full of photographic activity this month, with opening of the annual Hereford Photography Festival and photography student activity at Hereford College of Arts. The first term of the academic year is well underway now and the sixty-five returning HCA BA (Hons) and FDA Photography students will soon be hitting the streets of Hereford.
The city is home to many student photographers attending Hereford College of Arts. As part of their modules, students are given the task to photograph the city. Each student is given keywords to explore in the city limits. The people of Hereford should not be alarmed if they see a mass of young people armed with cameras. The students are instructed on the ethics of photographing in public spaces and will be carrying student identification.
The college also delivers short courses in photography. In addition, HCA also hosts taster days for young people who are thinking about studying photography and other students interested in including photography into their artistic practice.
A selection of student work from Hereford College of Arts will be introduced by Christabel Gingell on Sunday 25th September at the Hay-On-Wye Festival of British Cinema. By integrating the disciplines of moving image, animation, photography, graphics and illustration the degree course in Film and Screen Media equips its student to work in the multiplatform world of the new media increasingly used by audiences.
The following films will be featured:
Doodles Director: Nathan Wood 7 minutes A clandestine classroom romance, played out using animation in a live action world.
The Tik Tok Parody Director: Rose Dix 4 minutes A music video parody of Kesha’s 2009 chart topping single Tik Tok, performed by the writer and director Rose Dix. Created with online destination in mind, this short has gained over 25,000 hits on YouTube.
Curly and Black Director: Nick Chaffey 24 Minutes Inspired by the films of Leslie Nielson of Airplane fame, this is a humorous take on the American cop TV series of the 1970’s. Diamond in the Rough Director: Rob Gale 16 minutes Conceived as the first part of a TV series, the central character who has Asberger’s syndrome, is introduced.
An Apocalyptic Future Director: Sam Brown 3 minutes Using web cam and mobile phone footage, this short meditates on fear.
How to Throw a Witch Free Dinner Party Director: Jolene Archer 12 minutes. A witty exploration of 500 years of superstitions surrounding food.
Free but ticketed 12noon
Students on the Contact Course at Hereford College of Arts have been working with local film makers, Catcher Media, to produce a film about opportunities available for people with learning difficulties, after leaving school or College.
Commissioned by Herefordshire Council, Multi-Agency Strategic Transition Group and funded by the National Transition Support Programme the DVD focuses in on the lives and aspirations of a group of young people based in Herefordshire.
The DVD is compelling, funny and frank and gives a great snapshot into the opportunities and challenges that face young people with learning difficulties, particularly with the prospect of leaving college. The DVD follows individual students as they talk about their experiences from becoming a Course Rep in College to having the confidence to catch a bus into town and having lunch out with friends. We also get to see young people settled into independent living, supported by SCOPE 1st Key, to work placements at Kenchester Water Gardens, supported by Medcap Pathways, or being involved with one of the social enterprise schemes, such as mi-enterprise based in Leominster.
The students were also filmed taking part in a training session with ASPIRE choices, working on interview skills, and the importance of keeping fit and healthy by working out at a gym, such as the Point 4. The finished film debuted during the college end of year Summer Show where it received many positive comments and has recently been officially launched.
Catcher Media, the Film-makers commented:
We are a Hereford based production company who work with communities, so to collaborate with all the partnerships involved, and particularly the students at Hereford College of Arts was inspirational. Whilst working closely with the students over a period of time it was very evident to see their self-esteem and confidence growing. This DVD will now be distributed to Schools & Colleges so will hopefully provide a deep insight in to the challenges and opportunities available to the students on the Contact Course, and other courses specialising in working with young people with severe learning difficulties.
• Copies of the DVD can be obtained from SEN Team, PO Box 185, Blackfriars street, Hereford
• A trailer of the DVD can be seen on Hereford College of Arts YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/HerefordArtsCol

Indesign have an international reputation for finding the right fashion and textile design talent for some of the major leading fashion houses, and have been Agents for the best of UK textile talent for over 30 years.
The company only elects to work with a small number of colleges in the UK; however, they have been so impressed with the work produced in Hereford over the last few years that they came back to the College to see what our current 3rd years were up to. The outcome was that they selected the work of 4 students who all specialise in print for fashion, and took the work to a major international buying event in New York in January, where it was viewed by the top buyers and forecasters who work for the major global fashion brands.
Hereford work stood up to scrutiny, alongside many professional and established textile designers, and the results were outstanding! BA (Hons) Textile Design students Rebecca Marshall and Rebecca Wanklyn both sold work, as did Rebecca Cregan and Kate Pinhal, who joined us this year on our BA (Hons) Top Up in Textile Design. The students sold work to the likes of Calvin Klein and CK Home, Diane Von Furstenburg, Ann Taylor, Gap, and Marc Jacobs.
Responding to much needed social, café and exhibition space our stunning new Arts Space and main entrance for Folly Lane has just been unveiled.
Designed by Hewitt Studios and constructed by Keir Moss to high environmental standards, the contemporary and innovative space was funded almost entirely from College reserves. Integrated in the design are landscaped gardens and outdoor spaces.. The space is kitted out with striking café furniture, soft seating and tables, flexible exhibition panels, wifi access and computer points.
HCA approached us to devise a new front-end for their existing campus. As an Arts College, they demanded an innovative design-led solution. Our proposal delivers much-needed cafe, exhibition and admin space in a striking new volume. A reflective pool is used to both animate the space and mediate sunlight. Externally, the building is clad in a combination of local timber and anodised aluminium panels, subtly reflecting its immediate environment. A comprehensive landscape scheme roots the building to the site and creates a series of external social and exhibition spaces for the College and its students. Architects View, Hewitt Studios
The design and architecture is already generating great interest from national and regional bodies, together with installation of award winning café chairs designed by Vitra.
Ready for the start of term, students and staff are already taking full advantage of the space which has completely transformed the front-end of the College and generated a very different atmosphere to the whole envrionment.
The official opening events start week commencing 23rd Jan and includes an exhibition showcasing recent graduate work as well as a display from younger students from county high schools. The week culminates on Friday 27th with an Open House invitation to the local community between 10am -12noon and then the official opening during the evening.
Jesse Norman, MP and Clare Woods, Artist and Fellow of the college will officially open the building during the evening at the invited guest night. More visitors will have the chance to see the new Arts Space first-hand on Saturday 28th Jan during our Saturday Open Day for prospective students and parents, starting at 10am.
During her final year studying on BA (Hons) Graphic & Media Design at Hereford College of Arts Pippa responded to a student design competition launched by the Royal Mint to find a commemorative design for a limited edition £5 coin. The competition was rolled out to students throughout the UK.
Before she graduated, Pippa found out she had been short-listed for the Paralympic design. She was asked to make a few changes to her design by the judging panel, and with the support and feedback of her tutors, Pippa continued to refine her design.
Innes Jones, course leader of BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design, said of this final stage, “Pippa was supported and advised during the design synthesis. She went through a process of reduction to communicate key elements of the Paralympics through the simplest and most engaging forms.”
The finished coin celebrates accuracy, manoeuvrability and speed. Split into four, it features a wheel for manoeuvrability, a target for accuracy, a stopwatch for speed and the face of Big Ben to represent London and time.
Before becoming at student at Hereford College of Arts, Pippa worked in the design industry for ten years. She decided she wanted reawaken her creative spirit and challenge her knowledge by completing a degree in Graphic Design. She felt that the creative freedom she was allowed on the course really “helped her develop a contemporary design aesthetic and engage in the latest design concepts.” The support and critique offered on the course gave her a new confidence and ability.
As for the future, Pippa is now looking to create more interactive designs combining her experience in publishing as well as graphic design. She plans to create interactive magazines and books for Ipad and tablet computer use.
The College is incredibly proud of Pippa’s achievement. She tells us that the whole experience has been fantastic, throughout the whole process, particularly working with The Royal Mint. She graduated this summer with a first class degree in BA (Hons) Graphic & Media Design.
The commemorative coin will be unveiled and put into circulation on 14th November. The coins, the latest in a summer Olympic tradition dating back to the 1952 Helsinki Games, will go on sale later this month.

Susan Cross, former student of Foundation Studies, has been awarded the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize for Jewellery.
Susan, formerly a pupil of Bishop's Bluecoat School in Hereford, did her foundation studies at Herefordshire College of Art & Design in the early 80's. She then went onto study Jewellery at Middlesex.
Because of the links between Bishops School and the Art College, Susan attended a week long taster course, "I managed to get on that and spent a week doing art projects and it opened the door for me."
It was in her second year that Susan discovered her affinity with metal and jewellery making, taught by silversmith Wally Gilbert. "The staff could see I had a natural skill with jewellery and working with metal," she recalls. "It all happened very naturally and has evolved and developed since."
"It's always very rewarding and exciting when you hear of the success of student you have worked with," said Wally Gilbert on learning of Susan's award. "She was always a talented student."

Phil Hackett, 3rd year BA (Hons) Illustration student at Herefordshire College of Art & Design has won a prestigious national award for illustrating a series of Royal Mail stamps commemorating The Science Museum’s 150th anniversary. Phil has won the The Royal Mail award with a prize of £2,000. His highly original artwork was short-listed out of 160 entries, from art students and professional illustrators across the UK.
Phil is about to graduate this summer with an Illustration degree from Herefordshire College of Art & Design. His plan is to become a free-lance illustrator. Phil’s work is often figurative and well suited to editorial work. Often using strong themes of drawing and collage, his unique style is instantly recognisable as his own.
Phil has been studying in Hereford for 3 years. His home town is Newport and up until 3 years ago, was working for Lloyds TSB in Internet Banking! Phil says, “I spent long hours sketching and doodling on bits of paper and realised I needed to do something about it”
Phil’s work is now on display, along with other winners, in an RSA Design Directions Awards Online Exhibition at www.rsa-design.net.
His work can also be seen at the College’s Summer Show 06 between 24 – 28th June. click here for further details
Phil is also exhibiting at New Blood in London – one of a small group of students from Hereford selected to showcase his work to the design industry, at this international venue. For further details please visit: www.dandad.org.
Phil’s on a roll – if this wasn’t enough, he has just found out that he has been invited to join Talent Pool (part of D and AD), an elite showcase of emerging international graduates who are hand-picked from New Blood, and profiled as the next ‘big things’.
We wish Phil the very best of luck for the future - and we are sure it won't be too long before his illustrations are featured in the Broad Sheets!

Joanna Marshall, a student studying BA (Hons) Graphic & Media Design at Herefordshire College of Art & Design, successfully pitched her winning logo design for The Lifelong Learning Network for Herefordshire & Worcestershire. The logo competition was open to all students aged 16 and above who are currently studying at a Further Education College or University in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Entries were received from students at 7 colleges, and Joanna Marshall’s entry was selected by the LLN steering group as the logo they felt best represented their network. Joanna will be awarded generous design fee, by the LLN, next week on Friday 25th May.
The Lifelong Learning Network for Herefordshire and Worcestershire is a project funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and the Learning Skills Council. Its mission is to increase the number of people with vocational qualifications (such as National Diplomas and Certificates or NVQ Level 3), or in employment, progressing into higher education (degrees, foundation degrees, HNDs etc). The network is also working to ensure that once in higher education, those students will succeed. It hopes to achieve this by working with the colleges and universities to develop new courses where needed, and also to change some existing courses so that they have a greater element of distance learning which enables students to work from home at a time that suits them. It will also work to ensure that students are aware of all the opportunities open to them. The LLN is made up of all organisations with an interest in higher education in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and led by the University of Worcester.
For more information on the LLN for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, please refer to the website: www.hwlln.ac.uk
The LLN will be holding a vocational progression fair on Tuesday 9th October at Hereford Race Course, with daytime sessions for schools, colleges and then in the evening (6-8) for anyone who is interested in finding out more about opportunities to study in higher education within the two counties.

From Childhood Mud Pies to Professional Ceramist at 64!
Childhood photographs of Ann Kelcey (nee Robinson) of Clun show her making mud-pies in the garden of her family home in Stourbridge. Sixty years later, and now a grandmother of six, Ann graduates from Hereford College of Arts with BA (Hons) in Contemporary Applied Arts, and will be exhibiting at the Hereford College of Arts Summer Show, from 14th to 18th June, and then at the New Designers’ exhibition at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London from 3rd to 6th July.
After graduation Ann will work from her studio workshop at home in Clun, Shropshire, producing unique and beautiful hand-built vessels in Porcelain.
Ann had a long and happy career in Social Work before taking early retirement on the grounds of ill health. Joining an art class at Bridgnorth College to help in her recovery led to a chance visit to Clun, and ultimately moving there with her husband Colin. An ancient town nestling in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Clun has continued to be a source of inspiration for much of Ann’s work.
The move to Clun proved to be a major factor in the recovery of her health, and to a totally new direction in her life, which led to her graduating from a 3 year degree course the June and the beginning of what she intends to be an active and satisfying ‘retirement’
“I come from a family of long life, with a beloved grandmother who nearly reached 102, so I reckon I’ve got a good few working years ahead of me” says Ann. “She set my sister and me a wonderful example of a creative life in old age – an example I intend to set for my own grandchildren”. Ann says that she is passionate about clay, and although porcelain is notoriously difficult to work with, she finds it particularly rewarding.
“This is an entirely new direction for me,” she says, “and one which I find incredibly fulfilling. The whole process of transformation at my hands - a piece of wet, pliable clay to a finished piece of work, followed by further transformation by firing in a kiln is immensely rewarding in its own right, but to produce artefacts that might enrich other people’s lives is the ‘icing on the cake’ for me!”
Fascinated by the effects of age and weathering on stone, metal and wood, Ann discovered that some of these qualities can also be seen within clay in its raw state, which can be captured or retained by kiln firing or, conversely, modified during the same process. “I work intuitively with the materials,” says Ann “hand-building all of my work, sometimes using a combination of throwing on the wheel with slab building. I use copper, impressed stamps, and touches of glaze to create other dimensions within the piece.”

Madonna returns to Bartestree Convent
On Monday 7th July, Frome Court, the former convent at Bartestree, welcomed home a statue of a Madonna following her rescue by property developer Strand Homes and restoration by Hereford College of Arts.
The 5ft statue resided in a stone ‘Grotto’ in the grounds of the historic Pugin-inspired 19th Century convent, now renovated into luxury apartments, and when Strand Homes temporarily dismantled the structure it was discovered that the Madonna was in a state of disrepair.
Steve Bourke, Ceramics Technical Demonstrator for Hereford College of Arts, took up the challenge and, following several months of intricate work which included moulding new hands and feet, producing a new base and re-painting her original pure white and striking blue robe, looked on proudly today as she was carefully lifted back on to the Grotto:
“For the last year she has been pride of place in my workshop and my students have been involved in each stage of her restoration. We actually moulded the new feet from those of one of the students, but the hands had to be carved by hand because they were so delicate.”
“I contacted the Catholic Church to research the history of this particular statue and to ensure that I restored her correctly; they sent me hundreds of photos of different ‘Madonnas’ but it became apparent that this is a one-off which has made it even more rewarding for me to complete her repair. She has been looking over me for a year and I’m sorry to see her go, but I’ll be returning to Frome Court at least once a year to make sure that she stays in good condition and complete any touch-up work that is required.”
Residents came out in the sunshine to welcome the Madonna to her new home in the ‘Garden of Remembrance’ within the landscaped grounds; Mrs Parsons, who moved into a two bedroom top floor apartment last November, was particularly happy to see her return, “I visit these grounds everyday and I’m so pleased that the Madonna is back where she belongs. She has been in repair since I moved in but I have researched her history and have been waiting for her to return, she is a very important part of the convent’s past and its future.”
Strand Homes, who made a donation to Hereford College of Arts in return for their kind efforts, began the renovation of the convent in 2003 and it is now in its final phase with 10 properties remaining for sale from an initial 61. The original features of the Grade II Listed building have been complemented by modern, superior quality interiors, each home individually designed to offer a unique appeal to the discerning house buyer.

As part of the Borderlines Film Festival and Hereford Photography Festival Hereford College of Arts BA (Hons) Photography student Rob McLean has catalogued a fascinating collection of images profiling the Arts Alive project, Flicks In The Sticks.
Rob says, "Flicks in the Sticks was founded in 1999. Using a combination of professional technicians and generous volunteers, it has helped to bring almost 600 films each year to rural locations in Herefordshire and Shropshire. The Trust works at over 120 venues, from village halls to churches and even woodland.
These images are just some of a collection that was taken in the locations where Flicks in the Sticks movies are shown. They are intentionally focused upon only village halls, as the transitory nature of these buildings helps to emphasise the very nature of the project.
The community aspect of these events is deliberately missing from most of the images shown, as often the clashes between the current users of the halls and those who were there previously come to light in fascinating ways.
More than anything, I hope the images highlight those in-between moments when all attention is elsewhere. I feel that this is directly indicative of the environments that the films are shown in"
