Title: New Designers 2011

Press Release::

Hereford College of Arts students at New Designers in London last week picked up one of the most coveted awards in Show – The New Designers Best Stand Award.

New Designers is a national and international showcase for all new graduates – it is the very springboard that can often launch a new designer’s career. Held every July, at the Business Design Centre in Islington, some 3,500 newly graduated designers come together representing the top 200 design courses from across the nation to meet industry employers, the media, trend predictors and a design hungry public.

BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing and BA (Hons) Contemporary Applied Arts students, together with the course staff painstakingly transported Hereford work to London and created a visually stunning stand, which captured an enormous amount of attention. It is, however, not just about having a well turned out stand – according to the criteria of the award, ‘they were looking for the most creative, imaginative, and professional looking stand design with the presentation and attitude of the graduate designers being as important as the finished stand” This award demonstrates the creative talent and professionalism of students coming from Hereford College of Arts – many of the students would have picked up commissions and gained invaluable contacts with creative directors from some of the major players in the design world.

The College is incredibly proud of this team achievement which brings together all the new emerging talent on offer in Hereford. We are delighted and will be watching how our graduates progress in their careers with great interest.

Title: Students from HCA exhibit at Great Brampton House

Press Release::

Around 20 of Hereford College of Arts' BA (Hons) Fine Art degree undergraduates will be working on a challenging outdoor project to produce a finished work in their choice of media in just one week. The project, Field Work, is to give students the opportunity to explore and interpret ideas outside the studio and to produce a completed piece of work for exhibition. Completed works will then feature in a dedicated Field Work exhibition at Down Stairs, the contemporary art gallery located at Great Brampton House.

Craig Barnes, Gallery Manager at Down Stairs, says: “Making art in site specific locations is a challenge for all artists. Come rain or shine, it’s important to get out of the studio once in a while. It will be fascinating to see how the students respond to the difficulties the project presents, and ultimately how the work responds to its environment.” Allison Neal, BA (Hons) Fine Art Course leader at Hereford College of Arts, says: “We are very excited to have a new venue showing contemporary art of such high quality in Herefordshire and we are delighted that our students are able to be involved in this excellent opportunity.”

The show opens with a preview reception on Saturday 29th October from 12–8pm, with hot cider served from 3pm onwards. The exhibition then remains open during opening hours of Friday to Sunday 12 –5pm until 6th November. For more information, visit Downstairs Gallery.

Title: The Courtyard Trailer Panel Brief

Press Release::
The Courtyard and Hereford College of Arts recently came together to create a new look for an old trailer! The Arts Centre has always had a strong relationship with the College and when they needed to revamp the old trailer in their car park, the art students jumped at the chance of getting involved. It is hard to miss the Welsh National Opera trailer in The Courtyard car park, now used to store the charities recycling, but instead of getting rid of it The Courtyard decided to make it into a work of art. Rebecca Storey, Media and PR Officer for The Courtyard explained, “The trailer gives us such a huge outside space that we thought it would be a shame not to make the most of its potential. Instead of seeing it as an old trailer we saw it as a large canvas! It’s the first thing you see when parking at The Courtyard and we decided it should make an impact and show what the Arts Centre is all about.” It was this brief that they approached Hereford College of Arts with – to design four graphic panels, the winner would then have their designs mounted on the side of the trailer. There was only one rule, it couldn’t be an advert for the charity, but instead had to represent what The Courtyard means to the people of Herefordshire. Final year students on the BA (Hons) Graphic & Media Design course were given the option to design one or all four of the panels, which could either be a continuous picture or made up of different elements. They then had to present their concepts to a panel at The Courtyard which made up part of their final assessment. “The brief really did challenge the students to think in a professional context – as well as researching and interpreting the requirements of the client, (The Courtyard) they had to design and present their ideas in a very real-life situation. There is some outstanding talent in this particular year group which was reflected in the different interpretations of the job – completely diverse but all very relevant. The whole project was a fantastic opportunity for the them” – Mark Jackson, Programme Manager for Media Arts It wasn’t easy picking a winner but in the end Peter Morrissey, from Dublin was chosen with his artistic feet! “The standard of work was amazing, we had all of the designs on display for the staff to look at and it really was hard choosing a winner. In the end we chose Peter’s as it encompassed all elements of what the Courtyard offers and we loved the idea of using feet – it made us smile every time we looked at it and that’s exactly what we wanted the art work to do - to make people smile each time they arrive at The Courtyard” commented Michael Connolly, Head of Sales and Marketing. The four images represent theatre, music, comedy and film, all part of The Courtyard’s varied programme and offer the chance to change panels in the future to represent other aspects of the arts centre. We have to ask…whose feet are they? “They’re mine! It’s very hard to find someone willing to foot model, so I had to step up and use my own!” Peter’s feet now grace the Courtyards car park, brightening up and bringing humour to an otherwise dull trailer.

Title: Nightmare on Edgar Street!

Press Release::
The Contact Course for students with learning difficulties at Hereford College of Arts was delighted to be given permission by HUFC to do a bucket collection at Edgar street last Saturday, 28th March. Arrangements were made, volunteers coerced, buckets purchased and decorated, but sadly not all eventualities can be planned for. When the day came, the bucket collection very nearly became bucketless! Two nights before the game, the course leader, Louise Macintyre, had a dream in which she was caught in a horrendous traffic jam, had to park at the swimming baths and then run through the town trying to enable a wheelchair whilst carrying a dozen buckets! Not a believer in premonitions, she laughed it off, but decided to leave her home in Dorstone at 12.30 to give plenty of time to meet the other collectors at 1.30, picking up other helpers along the way. Unfortunately this meant travelling in on the Belmont road which had become completely gridlocked by a two lane closure caused by a gas leak outside Steels of Westgate. The nightmare unfolded as four collectors and all the buckets inched down Belmont road fielding increasingly frantic mobile-phone calls from collectors waiting bucketless at the ground, with the supporters pouring in. How many ways are there to break the news that you’ve only moved 10 yards since they last rang? It eventually became apparent that alternative buckets had to be found and one of the more agile collectors vaulted over the fence to Wickes to buy an emergency supply! The official buckets arrived at 2.40pm! The Contact course would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and stewards at Hereford United for their kindness and support, but most of all would like to thank the supporters for giving so generously to what had become a pretty shambolic collection! A total of over £300 was collected which will go towards the cost of the students’ residential educational visits. The moral of this tale is that if you have a nightmare about traffic jams in Hereford do not ignore it. There is every chance that it will come true! The Edgar street grid is more likely to become the Edgar street gridlock!

Title: University of Wales Annoucement

Press Release::
Hereford College of Arts has worked with the University of Wales as a validation partner since 1995, and has received consistently positive evaluation and feedback on the quality of its provision from both the University and its examiners and moderators, the QAA and in student feedback. It is therefore deeply regrettable that the University should have chosen to announce its plan to withdraw validation services through media announcements without either consulting or informing the College in advance, or allowing the College to communicate with its students who are enrolled on University of Wales degrees. It is our understanding that this decision is prompted by long-standing serious concerns about the robustness and adequacy of their quality assurance processes rather than a recent merger as claimed by their Vice Chancellor. We have received a general assurance from the University that they will ‘honour their commitments’ to these students, but we are seeking more specific undertakings that they will definitely see out students who are starting on three year University of Wales degrees, and also the students who will enrol in 2012 on courses which are already being publicised to them under the University of Wales brand in good faith on our part. The alternative would present us with an unreasonably short timescale to make wholesale changes to the validation of our degree courses. At this stage we are exploring options for the future of our Higher Education degrees. However, we are confident that the quality of our HE provision will be if anything enhanced by the opportunity to re-examine and re-validate with a new partner if that proves necessary in due course once we have evaluated all the options available to us. While this will inevitably place some demands on the capacity of a small specialist arts college, we are confident that we will rise to this challenge, and continue to ensure the quality of provision our students receive is of a very high standard.

Title: Dreams Make Us Who We Are

Press Release::

Students on the Contact Course at Hereford College of Arts have been working with local film makers, Catcher Media,  to produce a film about opportunities available for people with learning difficulties, after leaving school or College.

Commissioned by Herefordshire Council, Multi-Agency Strategic Transition Group and funded by the National Transition Support Programme the DVD focuses in on the lives and aspirations of a group of young people based in Herefordshire.

The DVD is compelling, funny and frank and gives a great snapshot into the opportunities and challenges that face young people with learning difficulties, particularly with the prospect of leaving college. The DVD follows individual students as they talk about their experiences from becoming a Course Rep in College to having the confidence to catch a bus into town and having lunch out with friends. We also get to see young people settled into independent living, supported by SCOPE 1st Key, to work placements at Kenchester Water Gardens, supported by Medcap Pathways, or being involved with one of the social enterprise schemes, such as mi-enterprise based in Leominster.

The students were also filmed taking part in a training session with ASPIRE choices, working on interview skills, and the importance of keeping fit and healthy by working out at a gym, such as the Point 4.  The finished film debuted during the college end of year Summer Show where it received many positive comments and has recently been officially launched.

Catcher Media, the Film-makers commented:

We are a Hereford based production company who work with communities, so to collaborate with all the partnerships involved, and particularly the students at Hereford College of Arts was inspirational. Whilst working closely with the students over a period of time it was very evident to see their self-esteem and confidence growing. This DVD will now be distributed to Schools & Colleges so will hopefully provide a deep insight in to the challenges and opportunities available to the students on the Contact Course, and other courses specialising in working with young people with severe learning difficulties.

• Copies of the DVD can be obtained from SEN Team, PO Box 185, Blackfriars street, Hereford

• A trailer of the DVD can be seen on Hereford College of Arts YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/HerefordArtsCol

Title: Hereford Textile Students continue to fly the flag in New York!

Press Release::

Indesign have an international reputation for finding the right fashion and textile design talent for some of the major leading fashion houses, and have been Agents for the best of UK textile talent for over 30 years.

The company only elects to work with a small number of colleges in the UK; however, they have been so impressed with the work produced in Hereford over the last few years that they came back to the College to see what our current 3rd years were up to. The outcome was that they selected the work of 4 students who all specialise in print for fashion, and took the work to a major international buying event in New York in January, where it was viewed by the top buyers and forecasters who work for the major global fashion brands.

Hereford work stood up to scrutiny, alongside many professional and established textile designers, and the results were outstanding! BA (Hons) Textile Design students Rebecca Marshall and Rebecca Wanklyn both sold work, as did Rebecca Cregan and Kate Pinhal, who joined us this year on our BA (Hons) Top Up in Textile Design. The students sold work to the likes of Calvin Klein and CK Home, Diane Von Furstenburg, Ann Taylor, Gap, and Marc Jacobs.

Title: Hereford College of Arts New Arts Space

Press Release::

Responding to much needed social, café and exhibition space our stunning new Arts Space and main entrance for Folly Lane has just been unveiled.

Designed by
Hewitt Studios and constructed by Keir Moss to high environmental standards, the contemporary and innovative space was funded almost entirely from College reserves. Integrated in the design are landscaped gardens and outdoor spaces.. The space is kitted out with striking café furniture, soft seating and tables, flexible exhibition panels, wifi access and computer points.

HCA approached us to devise a new front-end for their existing campus. As an Arts College, they demanded an innovative design-led solution. Our proposal delivers much-needed cafe, exhibition and admin space in a striking new volume. A reflective pool is used to both animate the space and mediate sunlight. Externally, the building is clad in a combination of local timber and anodised aluminium panels, subtly reflecting its immediate environment. A comprehensive landscape scheme roots the building to the site and creates a series of external social and exhibition spaces for the College and its students. Architects View, Hewitt Studios

The design and architecture is already generating great interest from national and regional bodies, together with installation of award winning café chairs designed by Vitra.

Ready for the start of term, students and staff are already taking full advantage of the space which has completely transformed the front-end of the College and generated a very different atmosphere to the whole envrionment.

The official opening events start week commencing 23rd Jan and includes an exhibition showcasing recent graduate work as well as a display from younger students from county high schools. The week culminates on Friday 27th with an Open House invitation to the local community between 10am -12noon and then the official opening during the evening.

Jesse Norman, MP and Clare Woods, Artist and Fellow of the college will officially open the building during the evening at the invited guest night. More visitors will have the chance to see the new Arts Space first-hand on Saturday 28th Jan during our Saturday Open Day for prospective students and parents, starting at 10am.

Title: Success for Pippa

Press Release::

During her final year studying on BA (Hons) Graphic & Media Design at Hereford College of Arts Pippa responded to a student design competition launched by the Royal Mint to find a commemorative design for a limited edition £5 coin. The competition was rolled out to students throughout the UK.

Before she graduated, Pippa found out she had been short-listed for the Paralympic design. She was asked to make a few changes to her design by the judging panel, and with the support and feedback of her tutors, Pippa continued to refine her design.

Innes Jones, course leader of BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design, said of this final stage, “Pippa was supported and advised during the design synthesis. She went through a process of reduction to communicate key elements of the Paralympics through the simplest and most engaging forms.”

The finished coin celebrates accuracy, manoeuvrability and speed. Split into four, it features a wheel for manoeuvrability, a target for accuracy, a stopwatch for speed and the face of Big Ben to represent London and time.

Before becoming at student at Hereford College of Arts, Pippa worked in the design industry for ten years. She decided she wanted reawaken her creative spirit and challenge her knowledge by completing a degree in Graphic Design. She felt that the creative freedom she was allowed on the course really “helped her develop a contemporary design aesthetic and engage in the latest design concepts.” The support and critique offered on the course gave her a new confidence and ability.

As for the future, Pippa is now looking to create more interactive designs combining her experience in publishing as well as graphic design. She plans to create interactive magazines and books for Ipad and tablet computer use.

The College is incredibly proud of Pippa’s achievement. She tells us that the whole experience has been fantastic, throughout the whole process, particularly working with The Royal Mint. She graduated this summer with a first class degree in BA (Hons) Graphic & Media Design.

The commemorative coin will be unveiled and put into circulation on 14th November. The coins, the latest in a summer Olympic tradition dating back to the 1952 Helsinki Games, will go on sale later this month.

The murals are receiving positive comments from the public and the Waterstone’s staff are 'thrilled' with the result.

The students who took part are Stephanie Moulden, Jo Parker, Suzanne Booton, Kim Waring, Rachel Saville, Catharine Murray, Rosanna Pindoria, Grant Peacock, Joe Kittridge, Elizabeth Wynell-Mayow and Adam Bayley. The subject matter was agreed upon with support from the Waterstones staff but the designs and concept are entirely products of the students’ imagination. In the artworks, the river Wye flows through each panel and the images around it. Using the River Wye was a way to evoke of the natural and cultural diversity of the county as well as illustrating the enthusiastic way the locals and the tourists engage with it. The murals will be on display during January.

Title: Take One... Bell

Press Release::
The Take One ...project is inspired by the National Gallery's ‘Take One Picture’ project. Each year the Gallery focuses on one painting from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in primary classrooms across the country.

The 2012 object is a Celtic bell. Over the centuries legends have been told about the Marden Bell, and few facts are known about it, but similar bells are known to have been carried by Celtic missionaries. There is also evidence to suggest that such bells might have been revered as sacred objects. Pupils from seven schools and students from the Hereford College of Art and Design have been involved with the project. Their work, along with the Marden Bell itself, will be displayed in the South Transept of Hereford Cathedral from Saturday June 2nd – Saturday June 16th

Participating students from 1 year Extended Diploma in Art & Design students include: Aphra Das Gupta Naomi Lamdin Lewis Hill Georgia Murfin

Take One is based on the National Gallery's Take One Picture.”

Title: HCA Stunning New Entrance

Press Release::
Transformation of Hereford College of Art’s Folly Lane Campus

The Art College’s stunning new entrance and exhibition space is emerging

Passers-by can now catch the first glimpses of Hereford College of Arts new build on Folly Lane. Designed by Architects Hewitt Studios, the building will provide a much needed social and refectory area for students, as well as a stunning new entrance, exhibition space and garden area with further seating. The project will also transform the overall look of the Folly Arts Theatre, so completing the overall look of the College in to an exciting, inspirational and contemporary place for students to study the arts.

Hewitt Studios said:

HCA approached us to devise a new front-end for their existing campus. As an Arts College, they demanded an innovative design-led solution. The building will deliver much-needed cafe, exhibition and admin space in a striking new volume. With a strong sustainability agenda, the structure is formed of glu-lam and mass-timber and the space is naturally ventilated and day-lit. A reflective pool will be used to both animate the space and mediate sunlight. Externally, a comprehensive landscape scheme roots the building to the site - it creates a series of external social and exhibition spaces for the College and its students.

The building, which will be ready for use in early 2012 will be a delight to students and staff. The College also intends to use the space for events that will be open to the public, such as lectures, screenings, gigs, exhibitions and social functions.

Title: Ed Curtis on his way to the Big Apple

Press Release::
Ed Curtis, former Kingstone High School and Hereford College of Arts student, is now studying fashion at London College of Fashion. As Ed is about to go into the second year of his degree, it is requirement of his course to find a work placement or internship. As an ambitious and aspiring designer, Ed decided to aim high and approached New York fashion brand Marc Jacobs. To Ed’s pleasure, they arranged an over the phone interview. “It was my nineteenth birthday and I was camping in the middle of Cornwall with barely any signal!” Nonetheless, the interview was successful and Ed is on his way to a three-month internship at Marc Jacobs in New York City, specifically working on the Marc Jacobs Ready To Wear 2012 Autumn/Winter Collection. Ed, originally from Clehonger, feels his time on the National Diploma Art and Design course at Hereford College of Arts was instrumental in finding his way into fashion. Ed’s experience in art was limited to textiles at GCSE level. He was unsure what direction he wanted to pursue. I didn’t know anything. But all the different skills I learned at the art college really helped challenge my thinking. I learned a lot. It’s not like I went to just a fashion college and was limited to only fashion. I can put all the different things I learned into my fashion practice now.” The National Diploma course (now called Extended Diploma in Art and Design) in Ed’s words, “gave me the confidence to reflect on my practice and decide what I really want to do. As a designer, I want to make clothing for women that are enjoyable to wear. I am not interested in conceptual fashion. I want women to wear my designs and enjoy them and feel empowered.”

Title: College Unveils New Arts Space

Press Release::
Hereford College of Arts officially opened the new Arts Space and gardens to a packed out celebration for invited guests on Friday 27th January, 2012. Finished during December, the stunning contemporary space took only 10 months to complete, since ground was broken last spring 2011. Over 300 people came along to the opening event which included graduates, students, local business people and supporters of the College, together with a range of creative practitioners living and working in the region. Richard Heatly, Principal started the evening with a few words about the College highlighting the need for a building of this calibre, followed by positive words of endorsement from artist and Honorary Fellow, Clare Woods. Jesse Norman MP also remarked that the new space was a great example of what can be achieved in Herefordshire by careful use of an organisation’s own resources and reserves. The College received much positive feedback from their guests. One guest commented that the building was a stunning new space and he was pleased to see this level of design being constructed in Herefordshire. Guests also had the opportunity to view a showcase of graduate work which formed the inaugural exhibition in the new Arts Space, as well as taking in a fantastic exhibition by local high schools. As well as being a much needed social space and exhibition area for students to benefit from, the Arts Space will be used for a range of benefits that will be offered to the local community and organisations, including an Associate Membership Scheme for individuals wishing to access the College and its facilities. The Arts Space was designed by Hewitt Studios and constructed by Keir Moss to high environmental standards.

Title: Hewitt Studios’ Arts Space for HCA Shortlisted for Prestigious Architecture Award

Press Release::
Hereford College of Arts and Hewitt Studios are delighted to announce that, in the face of formidable competition, the HCA Hub has been chosen by Building Magazine as a finalist in the 2012 Awards in the 'Public Building of the Year' category. The Awards are the most prestigious in the building industry, setting out to recognize the most notable achievements of the year from across the UK. Other projects shortlisted in the Public Building of the year category include Turner & Townsend’s The Hepworth Gallery and Stanton Williams’ University of the Arts Campus for Central Saint Martins. John Hewitt of Hewitt Studios said of the project, “Our client Hereford College of Arts, and in particular its Principal Richard Heatly, have been the inspirational force behind the creation of this unique and challenging building - without his patronage such a project could not have been conceived.” In this uncertain financial climate, the College have committed a substantial portion of their own funds to realise their vision for a confident new face to their campus. The project is self-financed, with no contributions from the usual FE/government funding bodies. The College provided the architectural brief; demanding an innovative, design-led solution. HCA wanted an open-plan, flexible space, but encouraged Hewitt Studios to explore new ways of creating an uplifting building that would act as a fitting backdrop to the artistic endeavours of the College. John Hewitt went onto say, “We are excited by the prospect of the college being better recognized for the contribution it makes to the life of the city, the new Hub making it more accessible to a wider audience. At the same time we hope the new space can help inspire its students by creating a prominent outlet for their creative work.” The space has now been fitted with a café that is enjoyed by staff, students, and guests of the College. It has provided the College with much needed social space and exhibition area.

Title: Stampede of Bulls

Press Release::
Watch out for a Stampede of Bulls!

Old Market hoardings adorned with themed artworks by young people from local Herefordshire County Schools.

This week, the hoardings of the Old Market development are being decorated with artworks created by students from across the county.

The works of art, each in the shape of the iconic Herefordshire bull, have been created as a cross-county art project co-ordinated by the Art Teachers Forum, which is run by Hereford College of Arts, in conjunction with developers, Stanhope. All the materials required were sponsored by the development’s principal contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, whose team is now setting about displaying the art on the development hoardings for the city to enjoy.

Throughout the county, weeks of work have been put in by each participating school. Originally given a metre wide template of a Hereford bull, the students were invited to express what Herefordshire symbolises to them, decorating each bull with original paintings. Each high school had a “quota” of bulls to adorn during art classes and the resultant designs will now enliven the hoardings for several weeks.

Max Williams, Schools’ Activities Co-ordinator at Hereford College of Arts, has headed up the project. She comments: “We are so delighted by the range of imaginative and beautiful designs that the county’s students have created. It has been a great project to be involved with and we urge everyone to come along and see the creative talent Herefordshire’s young people have demonstrated.”

George Ray, Construction Manager for Sir Robert McAlpine adds: “It is a real pleasure to support such an inspiring project for Herefordshire’s students, and we thank Hereford College of Arts for their hard work in making this great idea a reality.”

Participating schools include:

Aconbury Centre, Hereford Aylestone Business & Enterprise College, Hereford Barrs Court School, Hereford Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School, Hereford Fairfield High School, Peterchurch John Kyrle High School, Ross-on-Wye Kingstone High School, Kingstone The Priory Centre, Leominster Queen Elizabeth Humanities College, Bromyard St. David’s Centre, Hereford St. Mary’s RC High School, Lugwardine Weobley High School, Weobley Whitecross High School, Hereford Wigmore High School, Wigmore

Title: Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 07 in Jewellery

Press Release::

Susan Cross, former student of Foundation Studies, has been awarded the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize for Jewellery.

Susan, formerly a pupil of Bishop's Bluecoat School in Hereford, did her foundation studies at Herefordshire College of Art & Design in the early 80's.  She then went onto study Jewellery at Middlesex.

Because of the links between Bishops School and the Art College, Susan attended a week long taster course,  "I managed to get on that and spent a week doing art projects and it opened the door for me."

It was in her second year that Susan discovered her affinity with metal and jewellery making, taught by silversmith Wally Gilbert.  "The staff could see I had a natural skill with jewellery and working with metal," she recalls. "It all happened very naturally and has evolved and developed since."

"It's always very rewarding and exciting when you hear of the success of student you have worked with," said Wally Gilbert on learning of Susan's award. "She was always a talented student."

Title: Tom has designs for success!

Press Release::
Former Hereford College of Arts student Tom Bennett is a very determined man. So much so in fact that he’s not only trying to make a name for himself in one industry, he’s trying it in two! He has recently launched his own clothing line Pandy Cane which he hopes will cross the borders of music and fashion and hopefully help him build a strong brand in the process.

Tom left Hereford College of Arts last summer, after completing our National Diploma in Music Practice course, and he is currently at Buckinghamshire New University studying Music Management, Branding & Promotion. He runs the clothing brand from his bedroom at University and does all his trading and advertising online. Every order comes lovingly packaged in a specially printed pizza box, and full of free sweets.

The idea for the brand came whilst Tom was in Chicago on a summer work placement for Victory Records. He went into a sweet shop and saw some sweets shaped like pandas. The rest, he says, is history.

Whilst this is predominantly a fashion venture, he plans to keep his hand in the music business by sponsoring new bands. One of the first bands to be selected for this are new Hereford hopefuls Rupert and the Robbers. They will be going on a tour of University venues during their Freshers Weeks, and Tom will be going with them, trying to drum up some interest in Pandy Cane amongst the student market.

As if that wasn’t enough, there’s even a good cause involved. To keep in with the Panda theme, Tom has adopted one from the World Wildlife Fund, named Zhu Xiong. 10% of all money raised from clothing sales goes to the panda. Not literally of course.

Tom is now in talks with a number of clothing stores about stocking Pandy Cane clothing. He hopes that by this time next year his clothes will be available in shops all over the UK, as well as Europe and the US.

For more information on Pandy Cane, and too see the clothing on offer, please visit

Title: Art in the Woods

Press Release::
In only their 2nd week on the National Diploma Course at Herefordshire College of Art & Design, 1st year students had the opportunity to be involved in their first live community Art project, designing and installing site specific sculptures from the natural environment in Queenswood as part of H.Art. It was a great chance for the students to team up and make news friends whilst experimenting with new techniques and processes in a non studio setting.

The majority of our National Diploma students start with us at the age of 16, having just completed their GCSEs. Students progress from Herefordshire schools and across the borders, from Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Powis & Gwent.  The course aims to introduce students to a wide variety of different areas and support, during their first year – before they opt for their specialist pathway in either,
Fine Art, Textiles, General Art & Design, Graphic Design, Multi-media or Photography.

Title: Equality & Diversity Project

Press Release::
Equality & Diversity Project at Herefordshire College of Art & Design

As part of our commitment to equality and diversity, the College has recently been involved in an original and thought provoking project which is to be showcased in a performance on 27th June at 2pm.

The Contact Course at Herefordshire College of Art and Design is for students who have learning difficulties. The students have been involved in a very exciting project this term and were successful in an application for additional funding from the Learning and Skills Council Equality and Diversity budget - £4.500 was awarded to complete this integrated project. The aim of the project is to enable the students with disabilities to integrate with students throughout the College in a variety of ways. Using the diverse talents of teaching staff working at the College – the project featured four strands:

‘Keeping in Contact’ –-A Book of poetry and drawings by Contact Course, Foundation and National Diploma students, inspired by an integrated visit to Bristol zoo. Students across the courses collected a variety of pen and ink drawings together with poetry about their chosen animals. 100 copies of this inspiring and original book have been printed and will go on sale during the College’s Summer Show.

Ben’ - disability awareness film - The story centres on Ben who has Downs Syndrome and his pal Tom who is able bodied. They are both college students. Tom’s friend Ollie cannot accept Ben into their group of friends and Tom is torn between the two. The film includes location shots at the seaside when Ben is given advice from Mary, another student with Down’s, who tells him to be proud of who he is. The scene ends with them shouting to the sea, ‘I’m Downs and I’m Proud’! This specially written piece is to be edited over the summer. It is then hoped that the film will be marketed and sold to schools and Colleges to raise awareness and promote acceptance of disability.

Digital Story Telling - Each student has chosen an aspect of his/her life and has brought in objects and photos which have all been scanned and saved. Students have worked with mainstream students to write their dialogue, to film each other, and to edit their story. They will also choose a piece of music to illustrate the story. The digital story telling has followed on from a self identity project that the students had already been working on.

Dance Production - Four mainstream students are working on this project with Contact Course students. The dance, ‘Under the Same Sun’, is based on the themes of animals, and of difference and acceptance. The performers include three wheelchair dancers. The dance will be performed at Herefordshire College of Art & Design’s Performing Arts Centre, Churchill house, in the Dance Studio on Tuesday June 27th at 2pm. Fantastic and elaborate costumes, props and scenery have been created by year 1 National Diploma students in Art and Design working alongside Contact Course students.

The whole project is to be showcased at the Dance performance on Tuesday June 27th in Churchill House - Excerpts from the film and the digital story will be shown on DVD and the book will be for sale. Those involved in the project will have an opportunity to talk about their experiences.

Title: Beck's London Underground Map

Press Release::
Follow the Underground in Hereford!

When Beck’s London Underground map was first issued in 1931 little did anyone know just how iconic and influential this conceptual map would be to the world – and, that it would be included as an integral part of Herefordshire College of Art & Design’s
Summer Show 06.

Artists and Designers have been fascinated by the map over the years – and Viv Prior, finishing student on Foundation Studies in Art & Design is no exception. Viv has taken the basic rules of this design classic and created a navigation system that will take visitors into individual exhibition areas with the greatest of ease.

At this time of year, many art colleges across the UK will be exhibiting the work of final year students – studios, corridors, workshops and every ‘nook and cranny’ become important galleries housing work that will launch the careers of many emerging artists and designers. For most colleges, the greatest challenge is finding an ‘easy to follow’ map that will allow visitors to ‘access all areas’! Viv has cleverly re-worked Beck’s idea so The Circle line becomes the Artist Blacksmithing Line, The Bakerloo becomes the Foundation Line, The Central Line becomes the Illustration Line….the list goes on..

With the floors of the College lined with coloured tape, and a tube style ‘mini map’ to take with you on your journey – this navigation system is truly a work of art in its own right, and has been painstakingly researched and put together by Viv – who has apparently has left “nothing to chance”. The work itself forms part of Viv’s final major project on his foundation course which is about to come to an end.

Foundation Studies in art & design is a one year, post A level, fast track course which prepares art and design students for degree level study. The Foundation course in Hereford is one of the top courses of its kind in the country, having recently achieved Grade 1 in the College’s last OFSTED inspection. Some students will stay in Hereford and be part of the College’s undergraduate community; others have been awarded places at some of the most prestigious art colleges in the UK. Wherever our students end up, this is a time of great celebration and achievement for all of them.

Title: Orin Set for Idol Final

Press Release::
National Diploma in Performing Arts student Orin Vallely, from Hereford College of Arts has reached the regional final for Idol 2008.

Not to be confused with the similarly named ITV singing competition, Idol covers both the singing and dance genres, and is now in its fourth year.

Orin was one of over 10,000 entrants to this year’s competition, and has done extremely well to reach the regional final, which takes place on 28th September at St. George’s Hall in Bristol. If he is successful at the regional final, Orin will progress to the national final at Portsmouth Guildhall on 29th November, which will take place in front of a number of music industry bigwigs. Up for grabs are a record contract with a major record label, and an immediate single release. Last year’s competition final had a sell-out audience of over 2000 people. Despite the similarities in name with their old flagship Saturday night show, ITV will be covering the Idol final.

Orin has just begun his life at Hereford College of Arts, and his place in this competition is likely to generate a lot of interest for him among his peers. He has been singing for a number of years and has managed to achieve a Grade 8 certificate without any vocal coaching. He was also recently featured in local press for achieving exceptional GCSE results.

Title: Bronze Award at The Malvern Spring Garden Show

Press Release::
Fine art student, Elaine-Marie Wigg, has won a bronze medal for her show garden at this year’s prestigious Malvern Spring Garden Show.

As well as capturing the attention of the judges, Elaine’s garden has been receiving considerable attention, particularly on Preview Day, where the ‘great and the good’ of the gardening world have been viewing all the show gardens, with expert eyes.

Elaine’s garden, entitled ‘A Contemporary Courtyard’ as been designed for a young couple. It provides a place to relax and space to display modern artwork, in return for a moderate amount of gardening. The design draws inspiration from the landscape of estuaries and wetlands, without trying to replicate it.

Artwork created by Elaine’s fellow fine art students have been incorporated into the design. Painted mural panels back the deck, metalwork containers, sculptures and accessories have all be made by students to fit with the garden’s theme. Even Elaine’s publicity and information leaflets have been designed by a graphic design student who took on the challenge of Elaine’s brief, to compliment her vision.

Former magazine editor and professional garden designer, Elaine embarked on a degree in
Fine Art at Herefordshire College of Art & Design with the intention of loosening up her design ideas to embrace unconventional thinking and push the boundaries of design; “I came on the course to encourage my creative thinking,” she said.

Title: No Price Too High For Ridley?

Press Release::
Former Hereford College of Arts student Price James is set for big things. Since leaving the College in 2000, he has been working as a freelance film maker and animator in London. Seven years on, it would seem that his efforts have finally landed him a lucky break. In November, he was asked to make a music video for a friend’s band. He has since gone on to build up quite an impressive CV of work with up and coming musical talent, including Simian Mobile Disco, Friendly Fires, Operator Please, and The Teenagers. The results got him noticed by ‘Ridley Scott Associates’, the production company owned by Oscar-winning film director Ridley Scott. They were so impressed with the quality of Price’s videos, that they promptly offered him a job, and put him to work on the upcoming advertising campaign for 3 Mobile. He is now regularly travelling from his home in Hackney, to LA.

Price’s links to Hereford, and to Hereford College of Arts remain as strong as ever. On leaving in 2000, he was awarded the Brian Hatton award for the student with the most potential. He has been in regular contact with his old tutors in the graphics department, and did a brief stint of teaching at the College in 2006. He recently returned to the College a second time to give a guest lecture to students.

“I absolutely love Hereford College of Arts, Mark [Jackson, head of Graphics] was pretty much the person who changed my life, inspired me to create and to challenge. It meant so much going there I cannot even begin to explain it” Price James (via email)

Price hopes that his career will eventually take him into feature films, and he harbors a long-term ambition to become a film director. Working under such an esteemed and experienced boss, it’s surely a matter of time…

Title: Phil Hackett - BA (Hons) Illustration

Press Release::

Phil Hackett, 3rd year BA (Hons) Illustration student at Herefordshire College of Art & Design has won a prestigious national award for illustrating a series of Royal Mail stamps commemorating The Science Museum’s 150th anniversary. Phil is about to graduate this summer with an Illustration degree from Herefordshire College of Art & Design. His plan is to become a free-lance illustrator. Phil’s work is often figurative and well suited to editorial work. Often using strong themes of drawing and collage, his unique style is instantly recognisable as his own.

Phil has been studying in Hereford for 3 years. His home town is Newport and up until 3 years ago, was working for Lloyds TSB in Internet Banking! Phil says, “I spent long hours sketching and doodling on bits of paper and realised I needed to do something about it”

Phil’s work is now on display, along with other winners, in an RSA Design Directions Awards Online Exhibition at
www.rsa-design.net.

His work can also be seen at the College’s Summer Show 06 between 24 – 28th June. click here for further details

Phil is also exhibiting at New Blood in London – one of a small group of students from Hereford selected to showcase his work to the design industry, at this international venue. For further details please visit: www.dandad.org.

Phil’s on a roll – if this wasn’t enough, he has just found out that he has been invited to join Talent Pool (part of D and AD), an elite showcase of emerging international graduates who are hand-picked from New Blood, and profiled as the next ‘big things’.

We wish Phil the very best of luck for the future - and we are sure it won't be too long before his illustrations are featured in the Broad Sheets!

Title: Logo Competition

Press Release::

Joanna Marshall, a student studying BA (Hons) Graphic & Media Design at Herefordshire College of Art & Design, successfully pitched her winning logo design for The Lifelong Learning Network for Herefordshire & Worcestershire. The logo competition was open to all students aged 16 and above who are currently studying at a Further Education College or University in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Entries were received from students at 7 colleges, and Joanna Marshall’s entry was selected by the LLN steering group as the logo they felt best represented their network. Joanna will be awarded generous design fee, by the LLN, next week on Friday 25th May.

The Lifelong Learning Network for Herefordshire and Worcestershire is a project funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and the Learning Skills Council. Its mission is to increase the number of people with vocational qualifications (such as National Diplomas and Certificates or NVQ Level 3), or in employment, progressing into higher education (degrees, foundation degrees, HNDs etc). The network is also working to ensure that once in higher education, those students will succeed. It hopes to achieve this by working with the colleges and universities to develop new courses where needed, and also to change some existing courses so that they have a greater element of distance learning which enables students to work from home at a time that suits them. It will also work to ensure that students are aware of all the opportunities open to them. The LLN is made up of all organisations with an interest in higher education in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and led by the University of Worcester.

For more information on the LLN for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, please refer to the website: www.hwlln.ac.uk

The LLN will be holding a vocational progression fair on Tuesday 9th October at Hereford Race Course, with daytime sessions for schools, colleges and then in the evening (6-8) for anyone who is interested in finding out more about opportunities to study in higher education within the two counties.

Title: Tom has designs for success!

Press Release::
Former Hereford College of Arts student Tom Bennett is a very determined man. So much so in fact that he’s not only trying to make a name for himself in one industry, he’s trying it in two! He has recently launched his own clothing line Pandy Cane which he hopes will cross the borders of music and fashion and help him build a strong brand in the process.

For more information on Pandy Cane, and to see the clothing on offer, please visit

Title: Childhood Mud Pies to Professional Ceramist at 64!

Press Release::

From Childhood Mud Pies to Professional Ceramist at 64!

Childhood photographs of Ann Kelcey (nee Robinson) of Clun show her making mud-pies in the garden of her family home in Stourbridge. Sixty years later, and now a grandmother of six, Ann graduates from Hereford College of Arts with
BA (Hons) in Contemporary Applied Arts, and will be exhibiting at the Hereford College of Arts Summer Show, from 14th to 18th June, and then at the New Designers’ exhibition at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London from 3rd to 6th July.

After graduation Ann will work from her studio workshop at home in Clun, Shropshire, producing unique and beautiful hand-built vessels in Porcelain.

Ann had a long and happy career in Social Work before taking early retirement on the grounds of ill health. Joining an art class at Bridgnorth College to help in her recovery led to a chance visit to Clun, and ultimately moving there with her husband Colin. An ancient town nestling in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Clun has continued to be a source of inspiration for much of Ann’s work.

The move to Clun proved to be a major factor in the recovery of her health, and to a totally new direction in her life, which led to her graduating from a 3 year degree course the June and the beginning of what she intends to be an active and satisfying ‘retirement’

“I come from a family of long life, with a beloved grandmother who nearly reached 102, so I reckon I’ve got a good few working years ahead of me” says Ann. “She set my sister and me a wonderful example of a creative life in old age – an example I intend to set for my own grandchildren”. Ann says that she is passionate about clay, and although porcelain is notoriously difficult to work with, she finds it particularly rewarding.

“This is an entirely new direction for me,” she says, “and one which I find incredibly fulfilling. The whole process of transformation at my hands - a piece of wet, pliable clay to a finished piece of work, followed by further transformation by firing in a kiln is immensely rewarding in its own right, but to produce artefacts that might enrich other people’s lives is the ‘icing on the cake’ for me!”

Fascinated by the effects of age and weathering on stone, metal and wood, Ann discovered that some of these qualities can also be seen within clay in its raw state, which can be captured or retained by kiln firing or, conversely, modified during the same process. “I work intuitively with the materials,” says Ann “hand-building all of my work, sometimes using a combination of throwing on the wheel with slab building. I use copper, impressed stamps, and touches of glaze to create other dimensions within the piece.”

Title: HCA Student Films at Borderlines Festival

Press Release::
SMALL STORIES, BIG IDEAS: HEREFORD COLLEGE OF ARTS FILMMAKING STUDENTS HAVE WORK SCREENED AT THE BORDERLINES FILM FESTIVAL

MARCH 2nd 2009-03-02

If you want to see what short film work is being produced by students at Hereford College of Arts then head for the Borderlines Film Festival screening of their work on March 30th at 11.00am at The Courtyard in Hereford.

“Much of the work being screened has been produced at the college’s new Media Centre in Hereford city centre.” says James Clarke, Course Co-Ordinator of the Foundation Degree course in Film and Video. “Our next step is to continue getting the work we make out into the world for people to see what is capable with some creative thought and a lot of energy and commitment.”

The students on the Foundation Degree course in Film and Video Production will be in attendance for a question and answer session about their work following the screening. Ranging from a stark imagining of the future to a story about life rekindled, the selection also includes a series of 60 second ‘micromovies’ in which we watch various pursuits of happiness through to a left-field fusion of Shakespeare with a modern lust for money.

James Clarke says that “This is a great platform for our students’ work to be seen. Having material shown at a nationally recognised film festival is a very positive step for the course and the hope is that the audience will enjoy the range of work on offer.”

Notes: James Clarke is Course Co-Ordinator for the Foundation Degree Film and Video at Hereford College of Arts.

The Media Centre is the Higher Education site in Hereford town centre for Hereford College of Arts’ degree and foundation degree portfolio of courses in Illustration, Photography, Graphic Design, Animation and Film and Video.

Title: Operation Madonna

Press Release::

Madonna returns to Bartestree Convent

On Monday 7th July, Frome Court, the former convent at Bartestree, welcomed home a statue of a Madonna following her rescue by property developer Strand Homes and restoration by Hereford College of Arts.

The 5ft statue resided in a stone ‘Grotto’ in the grounds of the historic Pugin-inspired 19th Century convent, now renovated into luxury apartments, and when Strand Homes temporarily dismantled the structure it was discovered that the Madonna was in a state of disrepair.

Steve Bourke, Ceramics Technical Demonstrator for Hereford College of Arts, took up the challenge and, following several months of intricate work which included moulding new hands and feet, producing a new base and re-painting her original pure white and striking blue robe, looked on proudly today as she was carefully lifted back on to the Grotto:

“For the last year she has been pride of place in my workshop and my students have been involved in each stage of her restoration. We actually moulded the new feet from those of one of the students, but the hands had to be carved by hand because they were so delicate.”

“I contacted the Catholic Church to research the history of this particular statue and to ensure that I restored her correctly; they sent me hundreds of photos of different ‘Madonnas’ but it became apparent that this is a one-off which has made it even more rewarding for me to complete her repair. She has been looking over me for a year and I’m sorry to see her go, but I’ll be returning to Frome Court at least once a year to make sure that she stays in good condition and complete any touch-up work that is required.”

Residents came out in the sunshine to welcome the Madonna to her new home in the ‘Garden of Remembrance’ within the landscaped grounds; Mrs Parsons, who moved into a two bedroom top floor apartment last November, was particularly happy to see her return, “I visit these grounds everyday and I’m so pleased that the Madonna is back where she belongs. She has been in repair since I moved in but I have researched her history and have been waiting for her to return, she is a very important part of the convent’s past and its future.”

Strand Homes, who made a donation to Hereford College of Arts in return for their kind efforts, began the renovation of the convent in 2003 and it is now in its final phase with 10 properties remaining for sale from an initial 61. The original features of the Grade II Listed building have been complemented by modern, superior quality interiors, each home individually designed to offer a unique appeal to the discerning house buyer.

Title: Distorted Image

Press Release::
Spatial design students from Herefordshire College of Art and Design have been working with pupils from Wyebridge High School to design and produce work complementing Hereford Cathedral’s ‘Distorted Image’ exhibition which marks 200 years since the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

The exhibition considers distorted images of humanity in various contexts and invites consideration of how such imagery influences our attitudes and behaviour towards each other.

The Spatial Design students helped in the initial stages of the project by GCSE students from Wyebridge High School, have produced 5 installations based on the theme of distorted image.

Sarah Arrowsmith, the cathedral’s education officer, said: ‘It has been very exciting to witness the development of the project from its initial conception to the final installations. The students’ work is challenging and thought provoking.’

The whole project formed a successful bid from The Higher Education Academy to produce a short film exploring students' experiences studying art, design and media at a higher education level, in the context of a further education college. This was filmed and edited by National Diploma Media Arts students from the college, and is currently on display in the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition at Hereford Cathedral.

Title: Malvern Spring Garden Show

Press Release::
‘Contemporary, Cool & Creative’ Big support for Elaine, fine art student at Herefordshire College of Art & Design with her stunning garden, at The Malvern Spring Garden Show 07

A Show garden that includes artwork by students of Herefordshire College of Art & Design is about to go on show at The Malvern Spring Garden Show. The garden has been designed by Elaine-Marie Wigg, who is studying Fine Art at Herefordshire College of Art & Design.

Her garden, entitled ‘A Contemporary Courtyard’ as been designed for a young couple. It provides a place to relax and space to display modern artwork, in return for a moderate amount of gardening. The design draws inspiration from the landscape of estuaries and wetlands, without trying to replicate it. This stunning garden uses strong clean lines together with planting of grasses, perennials and bulbs, with clever use of shingle, timber, coloured glass panels and reclaimed metal. The garden has a two-tiered deck for relaxing, which overlooks its central pool.

Gardening is Elaine’s second career, which she embraced after leaving London and the world of magazines, in which she had worked for 15 years rising through the ranks to become Production Editor at Homes and Gardens.

A tipi garden Elaine created at the prestigious Malvern Spring Gardening Show in 2005, was well received and Elaine is excited by combining her skills with the pool of artistic talent in Hereford for this year’s show.

The whole College is behind Elaine and her garden which is sure to grab the attention and all seeing eyes of the judges because of its style, innovation and use of original artwork.

Title: Book Arts 07

Press Release::
Now in its seventh year, the annual Book Arts Competition has become a key event for the College, students and staff. Open to both staff and students from further and higher education, the competition provides a platform for artists to explore the many aspects of Book Arts - from the traditional to more experimental approaches and concepts to book making. Artists, designers and photographers all challenge the notion of Book Arts - and, every year these boundaries are pushed further.

The book works exhibited have been selected from entries submitted for the competition. They are made using a wide range of media and concepts based on the artists, designers and photographers’ interpretations and notion of the book. There are books as sculpture, and works which explore different types of narrative and the time based nature of sequentially folded and bound pages; some of the works on display are produced through digital means, others engage with more traditional methods of production.

Many of the works celebrate the tactile qualities of the book, some are very personal responses to a wide variety of subjects. There are books with details that require close scrutiny and examination and other works that have an immediate overall visual impact. This is a diverse and intriguing exhibition demonstrating that the book form can be appropriated by artists and designers and presented in new and exiting ways.

Prize winners and all entries can be viewed at the College until 14th May – the exhibition will then tour to Hay on Wye Festival, Edinburgh College of Art, The Manchester Artists Book Fair, The London Artists Book Fair and Winchester School of Art.

Title: Flicks In the Sticks

Press Release::

As part of the Borderlines Film Festival and Hereford Photography Festival Hereford College of Arts BA (Hons) Photography student Rob McLean has catalogued a fascinating collection of images profiling the Arts Alive project, Flicks In The Sticks.

Rob says, "Flicks in the Sticks was founded in 1999. Using a combination of professional technicians and generous volunteers, it has helped to bring almost 600 films each year to rural locations in Herefordshire and Shropshire. The Trust works at over 120 venues, from village halls to churches and even woodland.

These images are just some of a collection that was taken in the locations where Flicks in the Sticks movies are shown. They are intentionally focused upon only village halls, as the transitory nature of these buildings helps to emphasise the very nature of the project.

The community aspect of these events is deliberately missing from most of the images shown, as often the clashes between the current users of the halls and those who were there previously come to light in fascinating ways.

More than anything, I hope the images highlight those in-between moments when all attention is elsewhere. I feel that this is directly indicative of the environments that the films are shown in"

Title: FORMER HEREFORD ARTS STUDENT NOW MOST PROMISING DESIGNER MAKER

Press Release::
Samantha Bryan left Hereford College of Arts in 2001 with one thing in her mind – a burning desire to take her work to a national audience. On leaving the College with a first class honours degree, she was awarded The Business and Professional Studies Prize, and the HP Bulmer award for Design crafts, and within 12 months she had earned a further award (Most Promising Maker, awarded by the New Ashgate Gallery at the ‘Recent Graduates’ Exhibition) and been invited to exhibit at the V&A.

She describes her art as “Inspired by Victorian gadgetry and invention” and this has certainly captured the imagination of the British art community. Since exhibiting at the V&A in 2002 she has gone on to exhibit in Munich, and the US, and has had features in Crafts, Selvedge, and Craftsman magazines. She has also been featured on BBC1 and in The Times Educational supplement.

In 2004, Leeds City Council purchased a number of her sculptures to form part of a public collection, entitled ARTIMIS. In 2005, she designed a large scale suspended sculpture for the main atrium at the newly built health centre, commissioned by North Kirklees PCT. Her most recent public work consists of two wall sculptures designed for the new Pediatric wing at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, which were installed in 2007.

“I try to express a sense of fantasy as well as wit and humour within my work. My aim is to create an imaginary world for people to enter, a nostalgic glimpse of childhood fantasies. I endeavour to capture every imagination!” Samantha Bryan
