The main purpose of the course is to equip you with the necessary expertise for a future as a designer. It will allow you to develop individual interests through drawing, research and colour and will encourage experimental and original thinking through practical skills. You will explore print, weave, stitch and knit through various textile techniques and processes culminating in a strong bias towards realistic and professional outcomes.
During the 1st year you will develop the ability to initiate, develop and evaluate ideas (in response to commercial demands within the textile industry) using both constructed and surface pattern, incorporating a growing commercial awareness.
Each project will introduce you to specific workshop and technical skills. These projects will be complemented by a comprehensive theoretical and contextual studies programme of lectures and seminars, which will explore the ideas, philosophies and cultural issues within the subject. The use and application of I.T. will be ongoing.
In 2nd year, the course aims to consolidate the skills, knowledge and contextual understanding developed in the 1st year. You will investigate the technical and business demands of the industry through a series of ‘live’ projects and competition briefs.
In level 2 of the course learners may opt to follow a specialized pathway of study, by either concentrating on constructed or printed textiles or a combination of both.
Students will be well equipped to enter the textile and related industries as a designer. Alternatively, students can now progress onto our BA(Hons) Textile Design top-up, and study for a further year to gain a full honours award
